We have held back for many years to go into the webmailer space, since now and then new promising forks of RainLoop (-> SnappyMail -> Tachyon) kept coming out which is generally great, but they mostly those didn't go into the direction we were looking for. The venerable Roundcube on the other hand has a proven record, but has moved under the Nextcloud umbrella, and we can assume it will continue to integrate further there or at least resources from that project will be spent on the webmailer within Nextcloud. SoGO on the other hand has pretty much stalled in development.

This leaves us with no great options in the long run for our userbase, yet we see the mail solution as a core part of Cloudron itself. All this led to the decision that we bite the bullet and work on a new Mail app. The great benefit here is that we can finally tackle longstanding shortcomings like better spam, filter and search integration, as we can tailor that much better now to the platform features.

With that said, the current state is usable but lacks a lot of the things we want to see. But before we define the scope of this, we would highly appreciate if use-cases and feature requests from our Cloudron user base determine more of the direction for that app. So if you have ideas or encountered shortcomings with using Cloudron as a mail solution, head over to the Mail forum section and let us know!
