I have no idea what happens if I delete the user.

How could you? It's a matter how the apps handle a deleted OICD user account. I'd almost bet (unverified) that Nextcloud would uncouple such user accounts and keep them standalone.

For example, a former teammate or freelancer who is no longer active (and won't be coming back, but was active in GitLab, for instance).
Another use case: Imagine employees on parental leave (usually 6 months or longer). They will be coming back, but shouldn't receive any notifications during their absence. Later on, they'll be active again

Regardless of the reason for having inactive users in the first place, another way to fix this would be a different dropdown layout:

  • Active users (alphabetical)
  • Inactive users (alphabetical and dimmed), listed below the active ones
