<![CDATA[.io, or not .io, is that even a question ?]]>I read this article about draw which switching their tld because apparently the .io is unethical and potentially unsafe.

What do you think about it ?
Do you use the .io ?
Should Cloudron change his tld ?

But the .io domain is not part of the Cloudron brand imho (it's not like it's in the logo or anything).

TBH I think if all existing Cloudron.io domains just seamlessly 301 redirected to another TLD I doubt many people would even notice.

I don't personally think it's a huge deal. But some people are quite passionate about it and do think it is a big deal, associated as it is with colonialism.

Personally if I were the owner of a business with a .io domain I think I probably would change it, much like draw.io did (despite the fact they DO have it as part of the their brand).

to give you a concrete case to chew on it;
is you host a Cloudron for and behind individuals, organizations or countries authorities who decided to ban .io (British Indian Ocean Territory) domain purposely or by mistake in their firewall; then in the case of Cloudron.io, you might miss updates; which would be a security flaw.

I've read several articles about it and will probably avoid registering one myself.

Still, branding is powerful and rebranding something is a huge risk. I wouldn't recommend Cloudron attempt it. Maybe there is a way to balance things out with a banner somewhere calling attention to the issue and that Chagos support website.

The domain is controlled out of a company in london, so I'm not seeing the ethics issue. The security processes that failed have been updated, so I don't see a security issue.
