For some reason, starting on November 18, FreshRSS stopped automatically refreshing my feeds. Since then, I've had to manually refresh them with the https://yourdomain.com/i/?c=feed&a=actualize URL.

I tried running the systemctl restart box command mentioned in the other thread, but I received the following response:

System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down

I ran the command from the Terminal section of the FreshRSS app, am I supposed to run it from somewhere else? Or could there be something else causing the trouble?

@mdrockwell you have to run systemctl restart box with sudo or as root. So, sudo systemctl restart box. Can you try that?

@girish I tried running it with sudo and got the same result:

System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down

It didn't even ask for my password or anything.

It can be run from the Terminal section of that app, right? Or do I need to run it somewhere else?

No, you have to ssh in to the server itself. Running it from the app container won't work.

              @robi Ah, okay!

I just ran it from the root user, I'll monitor the logs to see if it refreshes automatically.

              Thank you!

@mdrockwell In the app logs, you should see ==> Run actualize script every minute or so. Do you see it?

Weird. The same thing happened to my FreshRSS today (or actually yesterday, the feeds just stopped refreshing). I could do manual refreshes, both on each feed and on the "refresh all feeds buttons".

I tried the systemctl restart box command, and I tried rebooting the server. Nothing worked. So I then tried to restore it from a backup from two days ago (since everything worked fine then). But the restore process just got stuck while cleaning up old install. So I tried uninstalling the app - got the same problem - stuck cleaning up old install.

So I rebooted the server again, and finally the app uninstalled. I then reinstalled it, and then I managed to restore it from the two-day-old backup. It now refreshes fine, in the logs I get a "FreshRSS starting feeds actualization at [date and time stamp]" every minute.

The fact that you, mdrockwell, had the same problem makes me wonder if something is wrong. I will keep monitoring this, and post back here if the error happens again.

@girish Ok, so my FreshRSS has been running flawlessly (and without change) for 6 days now (since my last restor on Nov-22). And this morning, it just stopped updating. Last articles from my feed readers seem to be at around 06:38 AM this morning.

In my logs now, I do not get the ==> Run actualize script line any longer. That just stopped this morning. Like clockwork, the Run actualize script runs every minute or so, and then it just stops. Nothing in the logs...

Look at this copy from the log file:

                            2022-11-28T06:02:28.000Z ==> Run actualize script

I tried restarting the box, and rebooting the server. Restarting the box didn't do anything (maybe I didn't wait long enough), but when rebooting the server, after a few minutes, FreshRSS updated its feeds. Here's the log output from the first minute/moment it started updating itself again:

And from then on, it has updated itself every minute or so. I've now left it on for half an hour or so (before hitting the "submit" button on this post), and the app seems to work fine now.

Curious if this happens again in 6 days (or sooner...?). This has only happened with this current version of FreshRSS.

I tried restarting the box, and rebooting the server. Restarting the box didn't do anything (maybe I didn't wait long enough), but when rebooting the server, after a few minutes, FreshRSS updated its feeds. Here's the log output from the first minute/moment it started updating itself again:

And from then on, it has updated itself every minute or so. I've now left it on for half an hour or so (before hitting the "submit" button on this post), and the app seems to work fine now.

Curious if this happens again in 6 days (or sooner...?). This has only happened with this current version of FreshRSS.

Right, I am pretty sure that the issue here is the kernel update.

@p44 right. unfortunately, it's all part of the "cron jobs don't work anymore" issue.

@girish oh dear, I guess this means the issue is with Ubuntu (I am on 20.04).

I will try to implement the fix you mention here: https://forum.cloudron.io/post/57216 Hopefully everything goes ok.

Is there anything I need to remember/do, to allow Linux to keep itself updated? Or will automatic updates resume?

                                      Thanks!

@odie @girish Ok, I backuped and implemented this change. It seems to have gone smoothly.

                                        However...

When implementing this fix, I got the following message when I entered the command sudo apt install linux-image-5.4.0-131-generic linux-modules-extra-5.4.0-131-generic

linux-image-5.4.0-131-generic is already the newest version (5.4.0-131.147).
                                        linux-image-5.4.0-131-generic set to manually installed.

Does this perhaps indicate that the kernel issue is NOT the problem with FreshRSS?

@odie I think that only means that package is already installed (but may not in use). Make sure you are running the right kernel using uname -nar

I am running the right kernel now. šŸ˜„
