License change

Hi, this is Steve from tldraw.

As of the recent 2.0 beta release, we have changed our license to permit non-commercial use only. See this article for more information: https://tldraw.substack.com/p/license-updates-for-the-tldraw-sdk .

This means that tldraw is likely not open source in the same way that other apps on Cloudron are open source, and is no longer licensed in a way that is compatible with its inclusion here.

Complexity is that Cloudron permits self-packaging and deployment of apps.
So it's quite possible for e.g. me to package tldraw, which is a nice app of course, and deploy it on my Cloudron instance without any breach of a non-commercial-use licence.

The fact that it is available on Cloudron doesn't mean it's for commercial use.

Hey @steveruizok -- there's lots of differently licensed apps here. e.g. Outline wiki is BSL, and specifically restricts paid hosting. Cal.com is open core. n8n has Sustainable Use License.

This would be the same case for TLDraw. For example, I have a personal shared computer Commons Computer https://commonscomputer.com. I believe I could run tldraw on there for my own non-commercial purposes -- in the same way that I could run it on Digital Ocean or anywhere else.

@steveruizok Thanks for reaching out and letting us know about the license change!

Cloudron is not limited to deploying opensource apps - n8n, cal, outline, joplin, minecraft, confluence, emby and many others. If it's not clear, tldraw is not used by Cloudron software and is not part of Cloudron installation. We created an opensource tldraw package (it's a Dockerfile) , that lets one deploy tldraw on their servers. The docker images are also public on docker hub. It's no different from say using docker cli tool (except we have a ui) to deploy tldraw on Windows, Mac (commercial "OS") etc.

We had a similar situation with Joplin Server. We made a installation note and post installation note saying it cannot be used for commercial purposes. We also put a sticky note in the forum section informing users about this - https://forum.cloudron.io/topic/7211/non-commercial-and-personal-use-only . You can see how this looks by trying joplin on our demo server - https://my.demo.cloudron.io .

If the above is OK with you, I can do the same for tldraw.

But at the end of the day, if you are not comfortable, I can de-list it immediately.

@girish hmm. Yeah this is interesting. Can you expand on your process for this?

What about all the other non-commercial or differently licensed apps?

I mean, the golden rule here is “be nice” and agreeing with someone’s request is the easy path.

@bmann there was no specific process. We only exchanged a couple of emails similar to this thread. I got confirmation from steve that he didn't want it listed and we de-listed it. I have no more information than this thread

Sad he didn't want to keep the 1.x version and license here while shifting to the 2.x version in a new direction.

Perhaps there will be other alternatives soon from such a move as it affects other motivated users..

Worth knowing that tldraw v1 remains under MIT licence.
It doesn't fit with Cloudron generally wanting to list maintained apps, and respect developer's requests.
But some may find it enough.
