Rsync is certainly the most efficient backup choice for me with S3 storage at least. Encryption is just plain sensible.

Tarball for whole servers with lots of data and apps is just CPU, time & space expensive.

Rsync hits the byte limit easily on some apps, eg: EspoCRM by default, and likely anything that has nested folders for file storage.

Soooo - how about, instead of throwing an error and failing the whole backup - that any rsync encrypted app backup that fails due top this limitation has an option to failover to a tarball just for that app?

This would be an ideal solution for me, and I feel a reasonable compromise towards backup strategy idealism.
