was using Hetzner for VPS but I switched to Netcup

Just on the basis of pricing? Or something else too?

I tried them but I found their UX so bad relative to Hetzner that I figured I didn't mind paying a tiny bit more for Hetzner (/me goes to check the price differences are)

      Oooh, very tempting.

      I'm currently paying €29.99 for 8 CPU 16 GB 240 GB

But at Netcup I could get 12 CPU 24 GB 960 GB for €23!

Not sure paying €6.99 more so for much less power (and, actually, most importantly for me, space) is worth the better UX 🤔

I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner

@jdaviescoates That was my thinking too 😉 I mean I did really like Hetzner UX but as I said when I saw the difference in prices/offering I felt it was an acceptable (/necessary as I needed more power for professional purposes) trade off. I actually kept a Hetzner VPS for my personal use for a while, but even that I switched some time ago when I was getting limited in resources. As you say storage space on Netcup VPS is also a BIG plus!

          Hey Everyone,

I was just wondering what VPS's you all use for hosting your Cloudrons? I figured it might be helpful for those who are looking to get started in this.

Currently I use BuyVM for my VPS, and use their very cheap Block Storage ($5/TB/month!) for a ton of cached hard drive space. It works really well actually.

For backups, I am currently trying that with a Hetzner Storage Box currently using a NexusBytes box for backup (much closer to the VPS than Hetzner was, which means speeds are about 20x faster). Would have used BuyVM for this as well except that I like to host the VPS and Backup on different services.

          What does everyone else use?

          @michaelpope

          • I host my Cloudron on a Hetzner server from their auction and
          • I also have a 20Tb Hetzner storage box for general backups (1 month of office CCTV takes 10Tb) and
          • I use Scaleway for Cloudron backups approx 100Gb (because I can't get my head around configuring Cloudron to use Hetzner and strategically I want my Cloudron backups in another platform just in case Hetzner has a meltdown)

I have also used Netcup and while their UI isn't great, it works.
Their VPS pricing isn't bad (better than Linode, Digital Ocean etc), but their storage seems expensive compared to a Hetzner storage box.

I have other VPS from SSDNODES where performance is not critical.
I host a Seafile server there for cloud docs storage, I find it better than Nextcloud. I would not use SSDNODES for Cloudron (I tried but they are not good for heavier usage) although the Seafile VPS performs well enough.

I'm hosting with Contabo on an NVME L VPS and using Backblaze B2 (TGZ) for backups. I'm a happy camper 🙂

I'm interested in Hetzner's Storage box. Keep me posted!

@humptydumpty Hey, so I have some Feedback on the Hetzner Storage Box. If you use it in Europe, it'll probably be all right, as you are a lot closer to the box.

However, for US Backup Storage of any sizable amount, it's going to be very slow. I was looking at around 60 days or so to upload 300GB (probably mostly because of the distance). So I'm looking for something a bit closer.

My ping response time for Hetzner was 146 ms, which isn't terrible... but I can get something around 7 ms with a VPS closer to home, which I think will work a lot better for the backup. We will see though.

My main Cloudron runs on a Netcup RS 4000 G9.

                • 800 GB SSD RAID
                • 32GB DDR4 ECC
                • 8 dedicated Cores (AMD EPYC 7702)

Backups at a 5TB Hetzner Storage Box. 24€ for the server and 13€ for the backup per month.

Haha @bushido just saw your comment 👏

I am using Vultr and Host Europe with Backblaze and Digital Ocean Spaces as Backups. So far, good experience with all of these providers. I'd give an edge to Vultr, though, because of the intuitive user interface and the multiple hosting options. I might exchange Backblaze for a cheaper option in the long run.

i use contabo. in my opinion, it's one of the cheapest on the market. you can also add additional backup storage. If you place more value on memory than speed, you can also choose SSD instead of NVMe. Then 8 cores with 30 GB RAM and 800 GB SSD only cost 14.99 € - https://contabo.com/en/vps/

@LoudLemur I use the smallest VPS with SSD (Cloud VPS S). For my small family (e.g. for using Nextcloud and Vaultwarden) this is more than sufficient, at least for my needs.
