Omnivore is a complete, open source read-it-later solution for people who like reading.

This seems to be a very good alternative to Wallabag.

@ctrl I like! It's pretty and pretty straighforward.

@ctrl it seems to need multiple containers : does this make it difficult to package for Cloudron ?
Beyond my experience, so just asking in case someone knows.
They say self-hosting instructions still being developed.
            But yes, nice app.

I like Wallabag but there is something about it which stops it being a 'go to' resource. But not sure what hangup is on my side 🤷

@timconsidine IMHO it's ugly and complicated (i.e. not fun) to use (just thinking about all the secrets I have to enter into a mobile client..)

Omnivore offers a browser plug-in and Logseq offers an Omnivore plug-in. Neither offers a server address option. Although I love the idea of a self-hosted Omnivore, if the relevant plugins can't accommodate alternative servers, I can't imagine the ROI is locked in.

It looks like it is not ready yet to deploy own/custom instances.
Here is a bug report covering the topic: https://github.com/omnivore-app/omnivore/issues/25

Nevertheless it looks very promising and we should closely watch its development. As time will allow it I am going to register for an account during the next week to play a little bit with it from a user perspective.

+1 from me; a more recent blog post by the dev suggests that there's progress for self-hosting omnivore: https://blog.omnivore.app/p/deploying-a-minimal-self-hosted-omnivore

@ctrl Yes, tool is very promising...

In the last year tried most of the "read later" app. Ominvore is minimal and have very clean interface, nothing to do with Wallabag (whose mobile app appears to not support highlights)...

I tried Omnivore for a few days and I really like it, I hope it will have a preferential channel in the development and become a Cloudron app.

@p44 I can second this. Recently I had the oppotunity to get my hands on. For now I used in on a daily base with the mobile app which is well made and integrates nicely into the OS from a usability pov.
Most things are there and work reliably. The only thing I'm missing for now is a way to automate tagging by custom rules. But maybe it's just me and I didn't find the feature yet.

Hands down I could imagine to use it long term.

This is in my opinion the most important thing: making sure that the app works reliably. I use apps like Readwise Reader or Matter every day, but every day I come across strange bugs or problems. The real problem with these apps just mentioned is that they want to rush to develop new features, but in reality they leave the old features full of bugs and logical problems.

You won't believe it, but just today I was thinking about updating this post to understand what the chances were of being able to support it on Cloudron. I will try in the next few days to understand if I can install Omnivore on self hosting, but I think it's difficult for me because I don't have enough skills.

Are you using the self-hosted version or on their site?

The question is not whether software has bugs, but whether they are fixed or not. I think end users have to learn to deal with this certainty. And that completely independent of whether software costs money or is available for free.

Are you using the self-hosted version or on their site?

I tested the instance on the site of the developer.

                                      @ctrl Great!!

In the "hosted" version other factors should be considered, such as where the data is stored and who manages it. While in the "self hosted" version these problems would not exist.

However, the app seems to be very smooth. Text-to-speech also works well.

In their docs I found a link to a blog post describing the procedure to self host an own instance based on docker.

@ctrl Thank's for sharing that link. I had already seen it in the past, but due to my level of technical knowledge, the procedure is very complex to follow. Have you tried following the procedure?
