Cloudron supports both Matrix (Synapse and Element) and RocketChat.

I think Matrix more strongly supports Freedom. RocketChat seems to be taking a "Fauxpen Source" / "Open Core" approach, confining some features, like Telegram integration, to the proprietary, Enterprise release. By contrast, Matrix has a bot that can create a bridge: https://t2bot.io/telegram/

Matrix is in some ways upstream of RocketChat, with RocketChat choosing to use Matrix standards:
      https://matrix.org/blog/2022/05/30/welcoming-rocket-chat-to-matrix/

There is a page evaluating these two platforms here:

      https://www.troopmessenger.com/blogs/top-self-hosted-chat-software

      https://selfhosted.libhunt.com/compare-rocket-chat-vs-synapse

      I wonder what Cloudron thinks.

Have you spent much time in a Matrix chatroom? How was it?
      How about time in RocketChat?
If you have administered both of these, was the experience much different?

My own view is that I am inclined towards Matrix.

I started using Rocket.Chat but then switched to Matrix. I still have Matrix but actually mostly just use Nextcloud Talk

I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner

Thanks. I should be looking at Nextcloud Talk at the same time.

We use matrix but the lack of search is pretty annoying. I think you have to install the desktop apps to be able to search.

@girish Yes, you can search with the desktop app (on Windows, at least). I do run into some issues with it though. Sometimes, I get the “cannot decrypt messages” errors, so looking up chat history might be problematic. When this happens, a notification w/ a button shows up that you can resend the request, and it usually resolves the issue. If not, restarting the desktop app + opening the element mobile app does the trick.
