Spacebar Chat (was Fosscord) on Cloudron - Open Source Discord alternative
-
Sounds very promising, but
Currently, Fosscord is still in development and we can't say when we will be able to release fosscord completely.
Still, certainly one to keep an eye on
-
@jdaviescoates I think that's referencing the overall project completeness of which there are many parts, however the self-hostable server is ready and their web-client can connect to both fosscord server and discord.

Does sound good — thankful the world has enough pissed-off smart people to keep challenging centralisation.

this definately needs URGENTLY more upvotes

@RazielKanos this project has not made a release yet - https://github.com/fosscord/fosscord-server/releases

Here is what Claude Sonnet 3.1 has to say about Revolt vs Spacebar. The last paragraph was more interesting than usual. It mentions which information it would specifically like to know to help its assessment.
" I can discuss what I know about Revolt and Spacebar as Discord alternatives based on my knowledge cutoff in April 2024:
Revolt:Open-source platform with a similar UI to Discord
Built with Rust and modern web technologies
Focuses on user privacy and data control
Supports custom clients and self-hosting
Has federation features in development
More mature codebase with active developmentSpacebar:
Newer project that aims to be API-compatible with Discord
Allows using existing Discord clients
Written in TypeScript/Node.js
Also supports self-hosting
More focused on Discord compatibility than novel featuresWithout being able to check the current state of these projects, I should note that my assessment of their comparative status may be outdated. Could you share some current details about their development status, feature sets, or user bases to help provide a more up-to-date comparison?
I'm particularly interested in hearing about:Current active user counts
Feature parity with Discord
State of federation/decentralization features
Community engagement and development activity" -
Wow. Looks just like Discord (obviously deliberate copy) but based on Matrix (and ActivePub?). Admire the aims:

@marcusquinn It is a bit tricky to get the client installed...
