Faster backup using rsync or tgz

Curious for Immich whether yall recommend using rsync or tgz.
I'm currently using tgz and wondering whether to switch to rsync.
The docs say that rsync will be faster because of concurrency and only uploading new data. But might be slower because of the large number of files.
Does it work better?

For apps which potentially contain much data, rsync should be preferred due to the incremental backups especially with a backup storage which supports hardlinks. This also reduces the required backup space.

Circling back after some testing.
Rsync with backblaze didn't seem to perform very well. Tho i'm not sure i had it configured correctly. It looked like it tried to sync everything each time.
Rsync set up with hetzner storage box works like a charm. Each sync after the first one is fast.
