      I recently announced to all my IG followers that I am going to break free from Big Data in 2022 and start using my very own self-hosted Pixelfed instance. If you want to join, you can find me at https://scookeoni.com/scooke. I think, because it's federated, you can also search for @scooke@scookeoni.com and you'll find my Pixelfed instance.

      I also have a Mastodon server running, and I'm @shane@social.futurnumerique.com.

      Both are set to be closed, for now. However, I am thinking of opening them up in order to let people sign up, in case they are hesitant to try running their own instance. But, I am nervous about that! How much work is moderating a Mastodon instance?? I don't think many will choose my Pixelfed instance since the domain is specific to my IG profile.

      Anyway, I just followed a bunch of people who shared their own federated profiles, so if you see a Follow Request from scooke or scookeoni, that's me!

      EDIT: I've been trying to use Pixeldroid there is still a bug in it stopping it from posting (to my own instance, at least). I've since stumbled upon Fedilab, installed from F-Droid, and though it lacks the built-in editing that Pixeldroid has, it can indeed post photos. I just need to edit them in some other app first.

        @scooke : followed you from @tcjc@fosstodon.org

        In my understanding of federation, you don't need to open your mastodon instance to allow accounts to be joined, your content gets distributed.

        I haven't used pixelfed but I would guess the same applies.

          @timconsidine Cool, I just saw you while in the Fedilab app and wondered who had found me so quick.

          By joining, I mean letting others make their own accounts on my instance. That's one reason I changed my Mastodon domain from whatever it was before to social.futurnumerique.com, it's more generic and open sounding.

            @scooke I guess the moderation burden is down to how many signups you get and how much they abuse it with nasty/illegal toots. Given the principle of federation, probably fine to keep it closed to new accounts and they can get accounts elsewhere.

            Or suck it and see, open it up and just boot them off if they misbehave. And lock down later if it gets too much. Your server, your rules, and no obligation to service a community.

              @timconsidine just be careful - my relay is "hidden" but once you find it, it relays what it gets. So, moderation will be a bit of a challenge till you get the hang of it.
