I've got an instance of Owncast installed. Love it.

Thought I'd give PeerTube a go too. But when I tried to install it I got and error telling me RTMP Port 1935 is already in use (by Owncast).

Can I just use a different port number? I know nothing about such things.

I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner

Yes, you can use any port.

@girish OK thanks, but I'm guessing there is some reason why they both default to Port 1935? is that the standard expected port for such things? I wonder if I'll hit any issues if I don't use that port...

@jdaviescoates Most protocols have a default port. The default RTMP port is 1935 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-Time_Messaging_Protocol . If you only have one IP, there is no other way other than to run multiple apps which have same protocol other than using different ports. (And of course, Cloudron itself supports only one IP at the moment).

The only issue would be if your streaming software cannot stream on any other ports, which is very unlikely. Simply set an entry for Owncast and one for PeerTube using the two different ports you set on your Cloudron.

@jdaviescoates EDIT! By default, both applications want port 1935~~. If you installed Owncast first, leave its port as it is as 1935.~~ During the Cloudron installation process for PeerTube,
set PeerTubes port to 1936. That lets both of the applications work ok together.

    Wrong!

Peertube is pretty fixed on using Port 1935, if you want to use it for livestreaming. Setup Peertube as port 1935. Don't change Peertube from any other Port to 1935, as Peertube won't work properly. It is better to just completely reinstall Peertube and start again with Port 1935.

    @LoudLemur can't remember exactly, but I think that's basically what I did 🙂

I have a feeling you would have done things the proper way, the way that makes things work, and that would have been to have Peertube on Port 1935 and Owncast on Port 1936.

Peertube on Port 1935 and Owncast on Port 1936.

Yeah, or any two different ports would work too, I think.

That is what I used to think too, but in the screenshot above, you can see that, for livestreaming, PeerTube requires 1935. I tried changing that, and then couldn't enable Livestreaming. I think it might be hardcoded or something.

@LoudLemur I guess the point I was making is that I don't think Owncast needs to be 1936?

I think that is right. I changed Owncasts Port around and it kept going well. Peertube seems to be the particular one.

Then it may be time to ask for a message to not change the peertube port during install/config just like with jitsi, if you do, it won't work.

I think that is a good thing to suggest. It will work, if the default port is not selected, but not all of its functionality (namely the livestreaming ability) would be available, as far as I understand.

I think it would be worth mentioning upstream to frama too. I don't know why they hardcoded it. Maybe it is a temporary thing.
