Most cost effective server for cloudron
-
I have been tasked with setting up a cloudron server for about 8 people to do a few things with (Valheim, docs, Nextcloud, and a few other things).
What server option would you choose to provide an always up, but reasonably priced solution for such a small group?
-
@privsec I bought a 2006 MacPro 1,1 with 4gb ram for 75.00 from FB Marketplace. I then...
- added one 500 gig boot/linux Kubuntu/cloudron.io with Jellyfin drive.
- I added a 350gb drive for Movies,
- A 4tb drive for TV Shows
- A 4tb drive for a mix of Movies, TV Shows, and Music
- A 500 gig external drive for anything
- Added A Nvidia Card with Cooling Fan I got for Free
With the Cloudron.io software (That Only Runs on Ubuntu), I was able to install jellyfin media server and put it on two domains https://matthewdykstra.xyz and https://bigbrother.house
I have been running it on a HiTron Cable Modem from Teksavvy ISP
With An Internet Package of- 300Mbps Down
- 20Mbps Up
- Cost Per Month $129.51 Canadian
I have been running the server for almost a year and only had one crash from the Factory installed 350 gig boot drive from Apple and that's when I added the 500gig drive as boot and re-installed Kubuntu
This setup can support 5 users on the server streaming TV Shows, Movies or Audio Files at a time.
I hope that helps you out if you have any more questions please let me know.

4tb drive
Got any recommendations for drives? I need more space!

@jdaviescoates
For what you will use them, video storage, small files, backup ? -
@MooCloud_Matt right now I'm looking for a large backup disk for my laptop and other machines I've got a home.

@jdaviescoates
2 option:
CMR HDD: good if your backup is daily scheduled and you cancel data often.
SMR HDD: good if you use that drive for monthly backup or secondary backup, that you will not interact with the storage frequently.CMR costs more and has less storage capacity.
SMR cost less and has more storage capacity.Good brands are:
Seagate IronWolf (NAS + Prosumer multi-disk setup)
Seagate Exos (more Enterprise) -

laptop
For that go for a big dramless SSD, if it is only of backup.
They are cheap. -
Whoa! That’s crazy affordable.
Ok, good to know. Thank you.
