Adding a new user with _ in their username doesn't work and generates no errors/ warnings/ messages

It should generate a message or something telling me that _ is not allowed in usernames (I'm presuming that is the case and hence why it didn't work?)

Right,
_is not allowed. Some apps like openvpn rely on usernames not having underscores. There's probably others as well.Where are you seeing this error? I tried this now and see a message:
