    So the PTR is only really needed for the mail server, it just happens that by default the mail server runs on the dashboard domain as well. Regardless of this might not hurt to have a note about this behavior and thus the required PTR change in that dashboard domain section.

      Changing the dashboard domain does not require changing the PTR record. The PTR record has to be in sync with the mail server location i.e Email -> Settings -> Mail server location .

        @girish I changed both, so that explains the confusion.

        First I changed dashboard from my.domain.org to my.domain.coop then the email server to mail.domain.coop

        The reason I thought it might be dashboard related was the notification said "expected my.domain.coop actual my.domain.org"

        I guess now I may get another notification saying "expected mail.domain.coop actual my.domain.coop"

          @girish but as @nebulon pointed out, by default changing the dashboard domain does also change the email server, right?

          I've edited my OP to suggest something about PTR records be added in both places in the docs

            Changing dashboard domain does not change the email server location (and vice versa). It stays as the old my.previousdashboarddomain.com

              @girish makes sense now, thanks.

              The point still stands that an additional note ought to be added somewhere in the docs about PTR records needing updating when email server location is changed 🙂

              (It was early hours when I made these changes and saw the notifications but I now see the notification was actually Expected: mail.domain.coop Actual: my.domain.org the whole time)

                  ah yes, sorry, i did update the docs after your post 🙂 https://docs.cloudron.io/email/#server-location has an info note now. The https://docs.cloudron.io/email/#ptr-record also has a line that says "A PTR record is required only when sending email directly from the server. If you are using a mail relay, you do not need to set the PTR record.".

                  I will add some more info to the dashboard domain section, hold on.

                      I added a bunch of implications under https://docs.cloudron.io/domains/#dashboard-domain .

                      On a side note, when writing this I found that there are some inconsistencies in the code (looks like the notification it raises might not be correct). Checking...
