@qwinter looks like grub is not being used there. Can you check if this is the same as https://forum.cloudron.io/topic/5424/cloudron-install-ubuntu-20-04-init-script-failed?_=1649963519462 in the end? I don't know what technology hostinger is using for virtual servers.

From https://www.hostinger.com/vps-hosting , it says "*All our VPS plans are based on OVZ virtualization technology." . Cloudron does not work on OpenVZ.

@girish Where do I see a list of hosts supported by cloudron? Trial an error feels inefficient. Yesterday I stayed up till 3AM doing comparison shopping, but it seems I missed the most important feature: is cloudron supported?

From the website, it reads like 'pick a host, it should work', but I'm pretty sure none of the ones that made it to the final list yesterday do support it What a waste of a good few hours.

@qwinter There is a note here about the requirements - https://docs.cloudron.io/installation/#install_1 . In general, there are way too many hosts to list what is supported and what is not! As for contabo, they do use KVM - https://contabo.com/blog/how-does-virtualization-work/

I think you can ask/check if the VPS provider is KVM based (which most modern VPS providers are these days) and Cloudron should work on them.

Quite a few of us have our Cloudrons hosted there. Great value & also powered by renewables (unlike Contabo)

@qwinter It's not really a waste, especially as a newbie. Now you know there are different kinds of virtualization! This is something I didn't know either a few years back. I was trying to run Cloudron on Virtuozzo 7 images that SSDNodes was using back then. I also discovered a little important factor called FS - file systems, and that ext4 was needed. I actually just commented out that check in the install script to get it to work back then. Now, I just stick with KVM.

You will find great freedom in open source. Here in these Cloudron forums you will actually find lots of good people willing to help (unlike, dare I say the name, the LET/LEB forums where ppl are just as likely to cuss you out and insult you for daring to ask "such an obvious question"). But you also need patience and humility as you try all this out.

BTW, you may want to read more reviews about Contabo (even on the previously mentioned lowendtalk.com/ or lowendbox.com) just to be sure you want to go with them. I'm using Racknerd and Wishosting (which has it's own idiosyncrasies) and SSDnodes, for example.

Loads of people online, including quite a few here too, have had lots of issues with SSDnodes.

Personally I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

@jdaviescoates Add Hostinger to the list too. I signed up for a basic web hosting plan with them. I created a secondary user account in their admin panel for my developer so he could have access and it didn't work. I contacted support and it took them weeks to get it sorted. Meanwhile, I ended up sharing my main account credentials. I was asked identical questions by different staff (under the same ticket) and I was tossed around like a beach ball in a techno festival. I had better experiences with EIG owned hosts and those guys absolutely s***.
