I think you are right, at least from an initial look at it.

@nebulon @timbo seems in practice at present you are correct, but that that may change this year:

This is apparently the place to follow along and support efforts to make Open Collective self-hostable (and generally make it a better tool for communities):

Can I install Open Collective on my own server?

Open Collective is already Open Source (MIT License), so in theory, you already can. But in practice, it's quite difficult. Our goal is to make it much easier.

There was recently a big scandal with Bounty Source. Got bought out by a crypto coin company who then changed the terms to say any bounties not claimed after a certain period became theirs. They reversed course after the backlash but still left loads of people feeling burned (e.g. the WeKan developer, who now doesn't even want to try using Open Collective nor Liberapay even though both a lovely projects - I personally know the Open Collective people pretty well, they are very lovely, don't really know the Liberapay people but not heard anything bad).

I know @xdamman personally (Founder of Open Collective, previously Storify) he lives in Brussels, and I think this should not be in the app wishlist, instead this post should be moved so that the community could discuss (in relation to making Cloudron sustainable and Open-Source) How best to influence the direction of the project, by securing a sustainable approach to how its main contributors are rewarded.

                  Ping @jdaviescoates and this thread : https://forum.cloudron.io/topic/2862/why-not-make-cloudron-fully-open-source-again/39?_=1602172468713

Imagine if Cloudron was using Open Collective and we could back it's operation with recurring small donation and even be able to attribute funds to other Open Source projects also hosted on OpenCollective. It could work out like a mass micro crowdfunding, perhaps there is a path to return to a Full OSS license this way ?

@marcusquinn I think my ideal scenario would be something like

                    1. Cloudron 6.0 fully open source again
                    2. Cloudron sets-up an Open Collective
                    3. All subscription monies get paid into the collective and all monies coming in/ out totally transparent (this is one of the really nice features of open collective) - sadly in reality this might not make much sense because of default %'s taken out - although OC recently started trialing 0% fees (still payment processor fees, obviously) with pay it forward option for contributors.
                    4. Option for people to pay more money into the collective should the so choose and have the means. Either lump sum or regular amount (both are already supported).
                    5. Developers who make wished-for apps can also be paid out of the collective and everything is totally transparent.

Or something like that. I ❤ open source and I ❤ total transparency (Buffer, for example, are really great on this, see https://buffer.com/about#transparency )

                    😉

So, I agree. But I still think Open Collective should be in the App Wishlist too! 😛

Self hosting Open Collective on Cloudron - sure, it it works as their hosted versions I guess.

Pushing that business model on Cloudron, meh, I'm fine with the current model - I hope the founders make a fortune and do as they please with it 😉
