Object Storage as NC Default Storage Location
-
I hope you're all doing well. I've been using Nextcloud on Cloudron for a while now and I'm looking to optimize my storage setup. Specifically, I'd like to make object storage the default storage location for Nextcloud, and I'm wondering if anyone in the community has experience with this and could provide some guidance.

I think this has been tried many times in the past but it doesn't work well. The object storage + nextcloud combination is too slow and behaves quite erratically. Nextcloud stores files as objects (and not using filenames). This means that when something goes awry, you can't even get your files back easily. This is how it was couple of years ago, maybe things have changed.

If it's a cost factor, or size of disk on your VPS factor, you could look at storing all your Nextcloud files on a Heztner Storage Box - they are pretty cheap and should work OK, I think.
Saying that, personally I think one of the main issues with Nextcloud is its speed and so I personally wouldn't do it and would always want my Nextcloud files on the same machine as the Nextcloud app and on an NVMe SSD drive.

Do lots of testing, and make sure the object storage system is fast and local to the NC instance since NC requires it's installed in that configuration (you can't change from one type to another after install).
This means the Cloudron package is not set up for that configuration at all.
