Better Alternative to Cloudron

I have not seen anything new for at least a year now.
What are you talking about?
Just looking over in the announcements category I can see that at least 22 new apps have been added this year!
That's over two new apps per month so far this year!
Plus constant timely updates to all the existing apps (way over 100). Plus excellent support.
Whilst I agree it'd be really nice to have Mumble and Jam, spouting unsubstantiated nonsense is not going to help get them here any quicker.
You are of course free to try out any of the many alternative Cloudron-like services listed over here (some of which have Mumble etc)
-
@sir-paradise yes, you’re definitely missing out on something better.
Cloudron is doomed!!! /s
And please stop starting topics like that because your (niche) wish for VOIP apps is not fulfilled: Nobody needs them. They all just don’t scale. Period. If your business depends on reliable voice / video calls for two or more people, there’s nothing else but Teams, Zoom, WebEx, etc.
Your conversation partner will be rather suspicious if their calendar invite does not contain a Teams link these days; and they will be super annoyed if your self hosted app does not work (and they all don’t reliably).
I recently had to endure such an app (might have been BBB but it was whitelabelled) when I had a video call with my doctor (who is not allowed to use Teams for privacy concerns). We tried for 20 minutes to establish a connection, then gave up and used Teams and it just worked. -
So all the progress they made, all the updates, new functions, new apps.. all thats nothing because they don't provide you that one single app you want them to provide?

You may have a look at my custom package for Mirotalk

I am not seeing any VoIP chat clients on the wish list being implemented
Have you seen other PaaS offerings which offer VoIP apps?
I haven't looked, because it doesn't interest me as a self-hosted app.
They're difficult to package which is probably the reason. For VoIP, it's better to use a dedicated platfrom.
Dozens around.
I use voicehost.co.ukIf you insist on self-hosting, look at https://git.cloudron.io/timconsidine/smsvoip-cloudron - custom package but quite easy to install.
However I have not tested voice - I use it only for hosted SMS.
In theory it works - check it out. -

Mumble is on YunoHost https://easyindie.app/install/mumble-server
And I'd guess quite a few other the others too...
A quick look would seem to suggest it's also available on Co-op Cloud, Caprover, and Unraid.
But who knows how well it actually works/ is maintained on those?
Perhaps @sir-paradise could go and find out and then report back?

I am loving the replies, thank you ;))
Don't look at this topic as a rant because it is not, and to the staff of Cloudron don't get me wrong I still think it is great, I think you're missing out on so many other types of customers by not trying to add more voice apps. I have done all my research and there are so many you could add that people would love. Jitsi and apps like it are more for corporate use, and these apps are heavy and people just don't like using them. I say this because I have been making chat client's since yahoo chat day's and I have a lot of experience in this field. On this forum, there is a list of suggestions for Discord alternatives, I would say speak to Zello and add that for a start. If you get the gamer's community on your side, you would be on a winner. Btw, when I say I do not see apps added, I only mean Voice Chat apps. Meeting and group apps like Jitsi are not going to pull in the other half of the market like for example Gamers. There are so many types of reasons why you should think about this, For example I use Zello on my ebike rides up the woods and even something simple like Mumble can be used in pain balling games, you got to think out of the box. Being stuck with Jitsi and Rocketchat is not great and people just go and stick to their WhatsApp and all the other big companies out there that are watching their every move, it kind of sucks. If you want me to give you some help on this, DM me. I say Zello a lot because it is free and also paid, but then you have other open source options out there, it makes me wonder if it will ever happen. You know I would love a Discord alternative, but I am trying to help you also. Most people I know always say, oh I hate Discord, and they're gamers. I have been on the Net for over 20 years and I could tell you some cracking ideas that would make Cloudron the top of the list because in the end it is about what type of user wants to use Cloudron so if you cover all markets you will be at the top. Take it from me, I have been there and done it many times through the years. Trust me, try to add a few that you can and you will see a big change. Think about it. -

I'd be very surprised if they would be at all interested. It seems their on-site self-hosted stuff is only for very large enterprise customers. TBH I really doubt Zello will ever be on Cloudron.
Apart from Mumble what other open source options are there? I'm not aware of any.
BTW, most of us here have been on the net a lot longer than 20 years

Please almighty….

enterprise customers
Jitsi, Rocketchat and the list goes on, they are all aimed at large companies, why would you be very surprised if they would be at all interested, If I was Cloudron I would be asking all projects like it, if they would like to be part of Cloudron, as I said it is all about money, but they could at least try and there are so many others to ask for simple installation scripts.
I have helped many companies myself and If I see potential in a company like Cloudron.
I do hope they read what I am saying, and think about it the (Discord Alternatives) subject because this is for Cloudron Not for the users using Cloudron.
Get some VoIP chat clients, (Discord Alternatives) install scripts and get the gamers on your side, and you will have them flooding in to make their own servers to use, trust me.
Discord has the stage right now but if Cloudron did what I am saying, it would change everything and Cloudron would have the stage, there are so many people that would love to self-host their own chat server because it is private.
Just Google Discord Alternatives and see how many new projects there are, so many people want instant voice chat. Not Webcam or voice clips/calls and text. That is for corporate companies.
At the moment, Cloudron is missing out on a massive part of the market, Gamers and other types of Hobbies that would use Discord Alternatives.
I would go speak to Zello and sort something out with Mumble and see what happens. -

I don't think you understand how Cloudron works.
@sir-paradise said in Better Alternative to Cloudron:
trust me
You have given zero reasons why anyone would.
TBH the more you write the clearer it becomes that you don't know what you're talking about.
I think we should probably all just stop engaging with your repetitive posts now.
At least, that's my plan. Cheerio

I am interested in hearing what some of those ideas might be, if you wouldn't mind mentioning some of them.
I would like more applications on Cloudron, too, for example for XMPP.
-
@sir-paradise We've investigated this before, and I would honestly say that I think the best option we found was FreePBX, and its just better to have it on its own VPS, for the same reasons you want Cloudron on a dedicated VPS, and not within a Docker Container.
You'll just have a lot easier time with it being dedicated only to its own purpose, ports, and being standard for any support needs for the app.
I think ProxMox might suit your needs better if you want to self-host a VoIP/PBX app.
Happy to be proven wrong, but the answer was to the "why" part of the question, and I think having a mission-critical app like that setup in a way that the app author would recognise and be able to support would be safer for maintaining.

Doesn't nextcloud do video calls, had a colleague with it set up. can't say I was ever interested in implementing it myself. Afterall, there comes a point where you are forced to video call to people outside your company and then people just gravitate towards the latest widely used platform, like zoom

Yes, it does.

Perfectly possible/ easy to invite guests to Nextcloud Talk calls.
But it doesn't scale like Zoom etc does for large meetings, at least not without the Nextcloud Talk high-performance back-end .
@doodlemania2 on here offers a hosted version of that, but I've not yet tried it myself (don't often have the need to host large meetings).

@jdaviescoates MiroTalk SFU does that, which @Kubernetes has a package for

Hello,
of course cloudron guys just do a great and very active job so I won't say more on this point.
I am afraid that if participants are more than 3, or you have a really powerful server or you have no real alternative than big services (not necessarily proprietary or big corporations).
BUT up to this number I tried in the past kopano meet (wich worked good, is very nice and is available in cloudron since a very long time), and then switched to nextcloud talk wich is just working great for video/voice calls:- user based or public access (using link)
- chat always available
- screen sharing on the fly
- phone app very well integrated with a great push notification flow
-
MiroTalk SFU is a lot better than Jitsi will ever be. I have been doing a lot of research on this myself and have found that yes, at this time, there is no real good option to go for. A discord alternative is not possible at this time sad to say but at the moment most chat packages today are all Jitsi alternatives with only conference calls and text. I did have a chat with one of the Devs at Zello, but they said they would only speak to Cloudron if they were interested. Go chat with them. Someone will bring back that type of Voice chat room experience but not at the moment, sad to say
It seems that live chat is a thing of the past now and all we have is conference type apps.
There are some projects out there, but they're listening to the Na Sayers too much, and they are left for dead, which is such a shame.
I was the owner of VoiceChatAlpha and all I did was put a different interface on mumble and made chat rooms, this was back in 2010 when Minecraft came out, and we had a 7-year great time, but then Discord came out plus mobile devices became more popular, and it was too much for me as VCA was only a desktop app for Windows which was great in its time. I started on Yahoo chat and made great friends in chat rooms, and it is this type of voice chat is now just a thing of the past and I have to face that fact that we have moved on from that sort of chat. I used to laugh and say the guys who made Discord saw my project VoiceChatAlpha and just done a better job than me. People are stuck with Discord I'm afraid.
