Mailpile (https://www.mailpile.is/) is a modern, fast web-mail client with user-friendly encryption and privacy features.

Having just played with all the existing email options (including Nextcloud Mail) I'd really like Mailpile to be available as none of the others come close to comparing to Gmail (e.g. on a basic level they all seem to lack label/ tag based folders, which it would appear is how things are done in Mailpile... although it still doesn't work very well in their demo so I guess it's not yet ready for prime time).

IMHO Mailpile is by far the best open source webmail out there... (because you can do searches like in:inbox is:unread has:attachment etc, and then save these - or any other searches - as tags/ label - the UI for creating tags could be greatly improved, but at least it does them!)

Any it looks like it's getting tantalisingly close to being usable...

Current version: 1.0.0rc6 (Edit: hmz, although this was realeased over a year ago now πŸ˜• )
        Next milestone: 1.0 (When?!?)

Once this hits 1.0 and gets packaged for Cloudron I'll finally be able to ditch Gmail!

@jdaviescoates Try Thunderbird with these extensions:

          be9ec887-55c1-45d0-848d-308198936cc1-image.png

Webmail can't compare, and Gmail is a waste of CPUs that is so pillaged for data that I don't know why they bother having passwords.

Don't kid yourself --- it hasn't been updated for 13 months!

So, to me, it's effectively abandoned.

Yeah, I (re) realised that after I posted. Hopefully one day it'll be picked up because I like it more than all the other open source webmail clients.

And/ or hopefully Roundcube and Rainloop etc will implement some of these features...

Well, the code has updates as recent as 2 month ago, it’s just not part of a release yet.

Yet, the developers are not hyperactive....

Some good news. Seems like it'll still be a good while until they'll be new web app but they just got a grant to work on the new back end:
