Transfering apps to a new server SUX!
-
Hi folks,
I'm beyond frustrated with two things in the Cloudron system:
a) the way the backups "work" (effen HATE, HATE, HATE everything about it!)
b) the way transfering apps to a new server does NOT WORK AT ALL for me.Can we please consider the following:
1: DOWNLOAD the app as a zip on the old server.
2: UPLOAD the zip to the new server.I don't care why you do backups the way you do, in fact, I'm willing to ignore it entirely BUT for that to happen, I need a better way to QUICKLY jump instances.
That would be SO much less trouble.
Thanks for your time reading this!

That is strange, I have multiple Cloudron Setups with a minio backup config and imported an app backup from of a hetzner storage box that used rsync with no issues.
Could you please go into details what you are trying and where it is failing?
Clearly there is something off.What:
- Cloudron Version are you using?
- Backup provider are you using?
- App is causing these issues?
The more details the better, because your frustration should not be.
-
The backup config of the app you want to migrate, you can download that in the "Backups" tab via "Download Backup Configuration"

@BrutalBirdie Thanks mate, I know how it SHOULD work (which still it never does but I don't want to debug it because that is not a viable option for me anyway). I'm saying that I do not want (in fact CANNOT) have the SAME backup on both servers. I should be able to act more freely on my own effen system, is basically what I'm trying to say

When importing a single app, your server wide backup config should not be overwritten.
Does this really happen?I have to repeat, please go into detail what you are doing.
Walk me through what you are doing, step by step, so I can understand and may even reproduce this error.
I know this might be tiresome, but beneficial for you and everyone using Cloudron. -
Allow me to repeat myself one more time:
I'm NOT looking to import the CONFIG from one server to the other.
Assume that's a given. For that reason alone it doesn't matter if it SHOULD or WOULD or COULD work.
It is NOT a viable way for me AT ANY RATE.I am looking for a way to transfer my apps MANUALLY (ONLY!).
Maybe I did not make that clear enough, thanks and sorry. Not meaning to be rude but I am way past BEYOND the point of frustration already... I know, not your fault and all. I get it. I was merely asking to consider offering more than your internal magic way of doing it, you know... for us mere mortals out here.

@svtx so what you are looking for is an interconnected Cloudron feature?
Where you can simply press "Move App to Server /N/" that will take care of everything? And with taking care of everything I'm thinking of:
Move the App to the "new" Server, remove everything from the old one and ensure the new app is healthy on the "new" Server. -
Take a breather and read https://docs.cloudron.io/backups/#import-app-backup - it's just the config of a single backup, not the whole server.
@msbt Indeed. There might be a misunderstanding.
But I can understand that part of that process can feel "wrong".
Especially the installing the app first to then import the backup for the single app again.
This step might be skippable in the future by just providing the "new" server the Backup config of the single app and then the server takes care from there.
(Hey that rhymes!) -

@svtx
Yes, then it should be exactly this https://docs.cloudron.io/backups/#import-app-backup here -

@svtx there shouldn't be the need to download and upload, because backups aren't meant to be on the same machine/local. So you don't need that step. Just create a backup, download the backup config of that backup and import it on the new server. No need to download and upload anything else.

No, really. Did you even read what I wrote or are you on complete AUTOMATIC mode? -

For the THIRD and LAST time:
I am NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT looking to import the god-effen-damed backup configuration!

If you must know: I have NINE cloudron servers, six of which belong to a different legal entity. There are strict regulations and contracts in place that don't allow them to connect to the same accounts/nodes, not even for a quick transfer. That is what I mean by: "ASSUME THAT IS A GIVEN". It really means that you can assume that there is NO ALTERNATIVE for me... There is absolutely ZERO possibility for us to do this the way Cloudron suggests.
The WHY:
We build apps on our own servers and then TRANSFER them to the client's server but we need a way to do so WITHOUT having them connect DIRECTLY. Again, contractual restrictions. (Ultimately a LEGAL ISSUE)There SHOULD be a way to "fix" things manually anyway but Cloudron completely lacks this at this time.
So, I guess I will not be recommending Cloudron to my clients anymore because it's simply not feasible. I'm better off launching an applet on a cloud using a SINGLE line of code and call it a day. That's your loss, really.
There is doing it "your way" and then there is doing something completely and utterly INSANE. I guess nobody knows you're doing it wrong, if nobody knows what you're doing?
Thanks for trying to help, despite appearances I really do appreciate the effort but we clearly don't speak the same language here. I will not draw pictures next, I haven't got the time or nerve anymore. In plain old english: I'm better and quicker off without you (Cloudron as a whole, that is).
Thanks, this has been... enlightening.
