Need a reliable data storage and backup application, nextcloud is not it
-
Nextcloud corrupted all uploaded pictures from mobile app, I could not access them from the mobile app, desktop, or web app. I lost 2 years of photos and its honestly made me very depressed. MY phone deleted the on phone storage and now with the cloud storage corrupted or Whatever TF happened - they are all gone. Needless to say, I f this happened to a customer of mine or a family member Id be in big trouble.
Anyone have any ideas on why this occurred?
Anyone recommend anything better then nextcloud? I need a good reliable storage container - thats it.

Are you sure the server-side images are corrupt? You can browse the local file system (instead of using the WebUI) to view and confirm, It's just possible Nextcloud became corrupt and fed your devices bad data. You can also recover most of the images by downloading the backups for the app and browsing it on your local machine offline as well. There are many ways to recover this.
As for moving forward, syncthing may be worth a look - it uses P2P technology to securely sync your data.
https://pydio.com/ is enterprise-level software (they have a community edition AFAIK) and you can install that manually in a LAMP app as well.Looks like a lot has changed with Pydio's installation, IDK if it's viable in LAMP anymore.Never heard of this issue with Nextcloud before (been using it since before the fork from ownCloud) so this may be a one-off issue / bug or it may be a hardware related issue.

@privsec Maybe odrive.com will help if you want to multi-cloud for redundancy.
syncthing.net sounds like a decent Cloudron solution too, although not tried it yet.
cyberduck.io or mountainduck.io with backblaze.com/b2 could also be an option.
I like the free tier with sync.com too, trust them more than the bigger names in that space. Decent mobile app too.
Main priority right now though is recovering those photos, feeling your pain on that.

@privsec Is encryption enabled for the cloudron backups or inside nextcloud?
For my photo stuff, I use emby and it's uploader is quite reliable. I used to use nextcloud but the uploader had too many bugs, couldn't make it upload existing photos on the phone etc.

@privsec You can download the backups via SFTP to the host server. I do not remember where sadly.
You can also decrypt the files if you power up the app again and run
occ encryption:decrypt-all [username]
then download the files from the apps directory on the host server under/home/yellowtent/appsdata/{GUID-of-app}

@privsec said in Need a reliable data storage and backup application, nextcloud is not it:
@murgero How would you download the backups to browse through them? I have encryption enabled on the app so I believe this would prevent that, right?
It sounds more like an encryption and not a corruption issues. Have you changed / switched off/on Nextcloud encryption and / or changed the password?
I remember I had a similar issue a few years ago when I switched off encryption for all NC users as admin but the files were all there and just had to be decrypted correctly.

@necrevistonnezr At initialization of the app I set up all the settings and encryption, and then I added the mobile app and then set up mobile uploads.
I havent change password's or disabled and re-enabled encryption either.
I do not know why this occurred, it is REALLY frustrating.

@privsec Looks like this is due to an issue with the desktop app and having server side encryption turned on. They have a Beta release available 3.1.5 that was released today that should address many issues.
However this requires server version 21. Currently Cloudron has 20.0.8.1 packaged.
@girish any timeline when server 21 will be pushed out?
