I think providing these services is important

I'd like this too. Although I'd note that none of the public instances I've visited recently actually work. Instagram is obviously blocking them. I'd guess a lower-use self-hosted instance could fair better, but I imagine it could also fall foul to similar blocks.
-
@jdaviescoates I found one that was working.
Lost it now but will see if I can find it again.
But for the reasons you state, I would prefer to self-host.
I think Instagram only cares about the big feeds, they're not interested or bothered about the little fish. -
@jdaviescoates I did have https://bibliogram.snopyta.org working to provide a user's feed by RSS
But I can't get it working now
Maybe they are blocking more aggressively
I guess anything listed as a source with multiple users is going to hit some limits and attract attention.
But there is still a chance it may work for a tiny self-hosted instance.
I will try it on my docker VPS and see if it builds, although their source page doesn't exhibit much confidence ! -
@jdaviescoates so I tried the docker image for bibliogram (
docker run
not thedocker-compose
route)
It actually starts and runs fine. But there is an immediate block from instagram
Kinda surprises me but maybe Insta has some way of detecting even a fresh Bibligram instanceOr they're still recovering from the FB outage and blocked a lot of things
Anyway, while it would be nice to have a working Bibliogram, I don't have time to debug or look for workarounds just now.
EDIT : there are 2 other install routes. I don't think they will include anything which acts to get around a block, but conceptually they might. Haven't tried them, just noting it in case someone wants to try one of the other routes.

@timconsidine That's interesting I used it (the one you linked) before I posted it and just checked again with profile's I didn't check last night and it all works smoothly on my end.
Either way I do think it would work in small instances as you've mentioned.
-
@timconsidine What is the latest on Bibliogram on Cloudron?
-
@loudlemur I have given up as Instagram seem very effective at blocking Bibliogram, even self-hosted.
-
@timconsidine Thanks for trying and letting us know. It looks like we will need a new way of framing Instagram, or an altogether better replacement.

Pixelfed. Already in the App Store

I'm really impressed with Bibliogram! As someone who values privacy and wants to use social media without sacrificing it, this platform is exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate that it allows me to view Instagram content without giving away my personal data to the platform. The interface is user-friendly and easy to navigate, and I haven't experienced any lag or technical issues so far. Overall, I highly recommend Bibliogram to anyone who is concerned about their online privacy and wants a safe alternative to Instagram.
-
@jdaviescoates Pixelfed is great, but the problem is when other people use instagram. One wants to view or share content that has already been posted there without inflicting its tracking on others.
Bibliogram acts as a kind of electronic condom, as does invidious and nitter and the other tools used by the excellent Privacy Redirect browser extension.
