Update Official Ghost Theme on Cloudron

Hi guys

Just wanted to ask:

Are you able to update unmodified official Ghost themes e.g. Casper to the latest version in Ghost Admin on your Cloudron?

possibly because

If you’re using an unmodified version of the default theme, Casper, your theme will be automatically updated

?

Like, maybe you don't see an update because it's already automatically updated itself?

I'm using the "Headline" theme (v1.0.0) and figured it would update itself. I also have Casper installed (was using that before) and it's at v4.1.0 so it seems it's not updating automatically for me either.

Edit: I see what you meant. Updating the theme through the admin panel does not work. I manually uploaded the Casper theme and the version changed from 4.1.0 to 5.2.3.

I'm still on Caspar 4.7.4 which is from April 2022! https://github.com/TryGhost/Casper/releases/tag/v4.7.4

The latest version is 5.8.1 from Dec 2024 https://github.com/TryGhost/Casper/releases/tag/v4.7.4

Ah, I think perhaps this is because Source theme is the default these days, not Casper!

But now I'm confused about how/ why another of my Ghosts running on Cloudron is using the Headline theme.

And also, it's not clear how one can update Ghost themes on Cloudron? Like, why is Casper so out of date? How do we update themes? None of my Ghost sites have the Change theme button shown here in this official guide https://ghost.org/help/update-official-theme/

Can confirm. You have to update them manually since the theme is just copied over on first run. You have to keep it updated manually because otherwise it will overwrite any custom changes you had.

@girish why not include an IF newer theme exists, wget the .zip and copy it over?

@robi it will overwrite any local changes. of course, one can diff etc, but this sort of work is outside the scope of packaging.

@girish oh, it's not a nice upgrade, all or nothing.

@robi I never looked into this much, but unlike WP, there are no child themes to use so your changes are wiped. I haven't updated my theme in... 2 years? It's working fine though, no visual breaking or bugs
