@nebulon That's a fair statement. With that said I do prefer desktop apps for Whatspp, Telegram, Element.

I use the web WhatsApp and Element. I used to have the Telegram desktop app, but I stopped using Telegram because of the ads (and because it's just another proprietary for private profit app that doesn't even have E2EE on by default).

I think for E2EE chats matrix is a much better option, tbh one of the reasons we wanted to move away from matrix internally was the e2ee which cases lots of side-effects, but that may just be user-error in many cases. Anyhow I understand that everyone has different trust levels depending on the data type and hosting setup, but just to put this in perspective, we don't plan to add this anytime soon to the chat app.

For the clients, we just started with the systems we use internally, which is Android and me specifically gnome. This is a pure pragmatic decision so we can start using it asap to find and fix issues early.

@nebulon that's because of the architecture of how the Matrix folks decided to implement e2ee.

You don't have to do the same, better yet make it better like Signal did.

Yes, Matrix seems to be a decent system, but who knows how great its security really is. After all lots of people seem to think Signal is a privacy focused chat app.

Understand your position regarding the audience and functionality. Makes sense, I guess. Will this be only chat or video calls as well?

As for the desktop app. Well, if you can consider cross DE app - it'd be a much better time investment (in my mind, obviously) as you wouldn't need to re-write for other platforms.

Damn, I might be one of those...what's the issue with it?

@avatar1024 not a lot IMHO, but some don't like that it's connected to phone numbers. Although you can also have usernames too now and even when you've got someone's number Signal doesn't display it so 🤷

IMHO it's still the best option that isn't confusing to use for average normal people.

Chat app is great, but I think I misunderstood positioning.
It's not a general chat app - channels and DMs require the other user to be have a Cloudron account ?

I have a new use case and thought this would be good to use, but it's restricted to users of my Cloudron instance - yes ?

Not an issue, I just misunderstood positioning.

@timconsidine we use it as the company Chat. It replaced Matrix for us. It's not meant to replace WhatsApp/Signal etc. It's a mattermost replacement for an org.

                    @joseph thank you for clarification.

Good, not what I'm aiming at.

                    Also good.
But cloudron users comes unstuck for this specific use-case.

I have no problem with Matrix/Mattermost.
But the user group in question would struggle with them.
And I'm not adding them to my Cloudron (could be thousands).

@timconsidine you're looking for IRC-ish style chats where you just visit a site, enter a username, and start chatting. No login necessary?

edit: this post wouldn't go through on the first attempt as I got a message it got flagged as spam by akismet. It went through the second attempt without changing anything. ODD.
