Sorry, the CAF is mostly hypocritical, singling out Apple and Google for something every single hardware or software games (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony ...), mobile (Google, Microsoft, ...) or music (yes, Spotify) platform has been doing (or unsuccessfully trying to do) in the past until today.

Oh, I agree on that totally - but if we're being honest here, I don't mind the hypocrisy as long as what they're trying to achieve will help users and consumers (and any pressure on Apple to not "disallow" sideloading I'm for). I'm just pushing for sideloading being allowed on Apple. Thanks to another open-source project I contribute to, altstore.io, there is one. At the beginning of it all, it was a cat and mouse game where they would "secure" something we needed to sideload apps to make AltStore possible. But since all this Spotify stuff and the antitrust investigation they have gone easy on us and even reverted some of the security that was locking us up after that.

When my existing phone dies I'm also looking forward to getting a 2nd hand phone that'll run /e/, LineageOS, or maybe even just the Android Open Source Project (i.e. Android without all the Google stuff baked in), probably in that order of interest.

Sp you're really into Android-based custom OSes huh? I've never met someone IRL that has one yet. Have you used any of the ones you listed before?

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it does really frustrate me that my phone keeps running out of space whilst it's got loads of Google apps on it that I never use and cannot uninstall.

Yeah, a tiny weeny bit. The Wileyfox phone I've got originally came with Cyanogen on it, but when Cyanogen Inc closed down it updated to stock Android instead.

There is no 'Power' one listed on the /e/ list of supported devices but they do list other Moto G devices, so I guess it might be possible

Personally, I'm definitely going to go for one that is specifically mentioned on the list (or similar lists for others OSs), and a newer one too. I want one that'll run Android pie, has Dual sim and a Removable battery. Probably a FairPhone FP2 (FairPhone 3 is out now, so easier to pick up a FairPhone 2).

@jdaviescoates You've heard of LineageOS i guess ? It's the "new" Cyanogen : the project created by basically the whole former Cyanogen team when Cyanogen Inc closed.

I ran Cyanogen / Lineage for a few years too, it's really great.

I love when. a tech member of the family makes them use all custom cool tech. I don't know that many people outside the Wordpress orbit, but it looks like your friend does some pretty cool stuff.

The Android ecosystem is so diverse with custom firmware. Makes me wanna switch. I just have to avoid the draw of the iPhone 12 mini

But I do work on AltStore which, in it's own way, half-of the way there. Open apps to all developers. I do want to upgrade to a new Android phone someday because I only use the Moto G Power for testing webdev stuff.

I for one like the walled garden of iOS / iPadOS that comes with tighter security - even with the existing security and appstore flaws it's far from the Android security hellhole. It's a system I don't have to worry about (more or less) - it's pretty secure even when my mother can use it (mother-proof security - I should trademark that). It's gotten so far that when I receive a suspicious email on my PC that I can't identify immediately, I just open it on my phone.

BTW it's what I like about Cloudron as well and why I pay for it even though I'm just a home user: I usually don't have to worry about it and I spent far less time fiddling with settings.

I feel the same way. I compared Cloudron’s App Store to a more catered version of an App Store. It just works is actually more applicable to Cloudron than iOS these days, but iOS Is my mobile OS of choice personally. I may be jealous of custom firmwares cause they seem fun. But I don’t even like jail breaking; too buggy. The only thing that was missing for me was sideloading legit apps that aren’t let in the official app store which is why I work on altstore.io. I don’t play Fortnight, but I could still install it if I wanted to.

I'm also running LineageOs on my one+6 without Google apps(with microG).

It's good, though I have one banking app not working at all and some apps without notifications (no gapps = no push).

I don't miss anything, and still install some apps from the playstore through Aurora Store which is working flawlessly lately.(It wasn't always the case)

This is probably most of them (for example Slack, Messenger, etc.).

I don't care at all, but I can see how it could be a deal breaker for other people.

I know this thread has drifted somewhere else, but I wanted to come here and say thank you to the devs as well. Thanks for Cloudron and for all your work. Sometimes I think about it and can't really believe there's just the two of you, @nebulon and @girish. You guys plan long-term, commit code everyday, are active on the forums, chats, git issues, are able to take the community's ideas and work with us. This is really much more than I expected from a two-person team, you guys rock!

Also, shout-out to all the app packagers out there, you guys are amazing! And to all the community, really, we've managed to grow a bit and still be supportive of each other, helpful, thankful, we've been able to disagree on things respectfully without becoming toxic.

Here's to many more years of this.

@malvim That’s exactly how I feel about @nebulon and @girish. When I found out there was only two main developers, it blew my mind. I have so much respect for their company and the software their built / build - it’s probably why I’m so invested in making it the best it can be. I should cool it with the feature requests.

Cause they have enough on their plate, but despite that @nebulon has taken a lot of time out of his day to debate with me about a Cloudron procedure in another thread. It’s touching that he’s taken so much time to explain his perspective and consideration of my opinions.

@girish often goes out of his way to help me understand box code too. Like linking to individual lines in the git just to help me understand. Like what other creator of a huge project like this would do that for me? Answer: @girish is one of a kind!

My favorite thing about both of them though is sometimes, people will request something for box and they’ll have it done and committed in an hour for the next upgrade of Cloudron. I plan on packaging a lot more apps but this has been a fun and wild ride. Thanks to the @appdevs and @girish / @nebulon.

Help the community pick up some of the communications work.

@girish & @nebulon obviously still participating, but without expectation to look at every discussion every day unless specifically tagged

@marcusquinn Agreed, I don’t want time taken out of their days that another app Dev could help me with. Restructuring the forum in the way you proposed may be a way to get more off their plate and allow us to help one another easier. Let’s see what they think cause I can imagine they don’t want to be forum-ing every day like they currently do. Well, so do I now - but you guys are great.
