The web. Email. RSS feeds. XMPP chats. What all these technologies had in common is they allowed people to freely interact and create content, without a single intermediary.
We‘re building the AT Protocol, a new foundation for social networking which gives creators independence from platforms, developers the freedom to build, and users a choice in their experience.
Your attention is an invaluable resource. A social platform's algorithm is responsible for curating the content in your feed. The algorithm, more than the content type or the app's appearance, is the core of social media because it directs how you spend your attention there.
This dude seems to know a lot about it:

And this:
Sticking this on the App Wishlist, as I have a feeling it's gonna be something to behold.

@marcusquinn I was waiting for this to get posted! Quite extreme! And I was even going to sign up...because I like trying out all these new options. I even got my own Nostr instance running using Umbrel, for example. But after finding out about this TOS with BS, nope.

For what it's worth, the terms of service have been updated. Not that it matters. As with everything on the internet, it's buyer beware and use at your own risk. For my part I'm comfortable with the underlying protocol and the role Bluesky (a public-benefit company) is playing in developing it and the reference implementations for it.
They have released a PDS (docker image) that will federate with their sandbox network. Federation with the production network will come after a period of time.
https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds
Federation still depends on three services hosted by Bluesky. Eventually it should be possible to consume these ATProto services from other providers, but for now Bluesky is the only one offering them.

We're all just training material for large language models now. You pay with your money, or with your time, nowadays also both, and with your intellect.

if it can't talk to ActivePub it's useless anyway

Oh dear:
Hey, well done on finding that and for bringing it to our attention. Very glad you are here, @marcusquinn

@LoudLemur We're in the age of having to pay more attention what isn't said among all the noise of what is suggested.
