OK, I have set the crate version at build time as suggested by the discussion thread.

I have published a new package now that sets the version. You can check by going to /api/config . With this, my android client works. Can others confirm?

wow, finally after weeks of frustration and searching around the internet for a solution @girish solved it!!!!
