What ever happened to Commento? Looking for Disqus alternative

Hi all,
What happened to the old Commento app? There are still threads and references to it abound, but a distinct absence of code.
I'm looking for a self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source alternative to Disqus - ideally something on Cloudron. What are you using?

@3246 Commento upstream (https://github.com/adtac/commento) was abandoned . This then became commento+ at https://github.com/souramoo/commentoplusplus which also go abandoned.
We started looking at remark42 as a replacement but it requires a few fixes which we have made upstream -
