Hetzner vs. Netcup network speeds for dedicated vCPU / root-servers
-
I'm in the middle of doing some homework as I'm looking to switch from Contabo to either Hetzner or Netcup and noticed that the network speed wasn't listed for Hetzner. I found this page and it says Hetzner:
The host systems for our Cloud instances all have a redundant 10 Gbits connection. This connection is shared by all instances on the host. We do not offer bandwidth guarantees for our Cloud servers, but you can expect about 300-500 Mbits.
Netcup mentions 2.5 Gbps network card on the pricing page. I'm guessing the actual server speed would be close to Hetzner's. However, 10 gbits vs 2.5 gbits would mean Hetzner can withstand more bandwidth on the host before I start getting network timeouts like I do with Contabo.
I was browsing r/Hetzner and noticed a few things:
- sticky post about new accounts getting banned
- server shortages (overselling?)
- network timeouts (reason why I'm leaving Contabo!)
I'm interested in a Hetzner dedicated vCPU server or Netcup's root-servers in the US.
Would you still recommend Hetzner over Netcup today?

@humptydumpty I am using Hetzner Cloud Server since 2015 and in addition an dedicated server since March. I never had any issues with Hetzner. No network timeouts, no performance issues, no (cloud)-hardware issues. Before I got my dedicated server I was considering using Netcup for the dedicated server for several reasons (something independant of Hetzner for more availabliity, lower price or higher performance for the same money...) however, after some research I decided to use a dedicated server for Hetzner for simplicity (eg. just one account, instead of two).
I also read about things like Hetzner is doing identitiy verifications for new accounts which never aplied to myself as my account is quite mature. So I have no idea how problematic it is to get a new Hetzner account - but I think they do the verifications for some reason.
Not sure if my experience help you for your considerations, but I am sure more opinions and experiences will follow...

Exactly this. Since the Hetzner Cloud is VERY handy with its API and pricing, some people like to abuse this.
That is why, for legal reasons, they started identifying users.@humptydumpty said in Hetzner vs. Netcup network speeds for dedicated vCPU / root-servers:

This is a very new "issue" since 6. June 2024 because they started a massive upgrade process of all hetzner cloud servers.
From CX21 to CX22. The CX22 now has 1x core more and 4 GB RAM more for the same price.
THAT is why there is a shortage. They are upgrading the whole infrastructure and people want more power for the same price.
Since the switch for more power does not come with extra cost, people MASS upgrade.@humptydumpty said in Hetzner vs. Netcup network speeds for dedicated vCPU / root-servers:

Never happened to me.
I have excessive monitoring of all my Hetzner systems for all hardware metrics and Service metrics.
~100 Servers +- depends on the scaling. -
There’s great to hear. Thanks guys. Time to see if I can get a new account going. Fingers crossed!
