In case anyone missed it, v10+ includes some 'significant breaking changes'. An ongoing discussion:

TL;DR Seems like Mattermost self-hosted version might not be free anymore.
Any recommendations for a comparable FOSS alternative, preferably Cloudron-friendly?

Although as someone commented there they still mention free in the docs https://docs.mattermost.com/about/editions-and-offerings.html#mattermost-free

Potential options include:
- Nextcloud Talk. Worth exploring if you're already using Nextcloud anyway
- Matrix/ Element
- Rocket Chat

Truth is their offers have become very much confusing, and well they seems to be confused too as far as the licensing they propose now as cloud AND self-hosted seems to have the exact same price as 10/m/user for the "professional" version paid for a year in advance (?).
I believe this is quite tight for a small startup that would 'eventually' scale, nonetheless one can still use it for free with a fair amount of good features (I've just installed an instance and was evaluating it actually). But--as I explained in another thread about FOSS recently--this is NOT really what we know as REAL FOSS anymore, as the free version, whether Team or Enterprise (this is confused AND confusing as well), is crippled of functions and thus imho constitute more a SHAREWARE than a FOSS as we know it.
On another note, why bother self-hosting it if their price per seat is the same as their cloud offer? (wtf? loll amazing... )
I hate Talk as it's not even comparable imho, however Rocket Chat is more likely though I haven't checked them for a few years. Will take a look back for sure.

Why not Matrix?
Matrix offers clear advantages over centralized platforms like Zulip, especially for users who prioritize privacy, control, and interoperability. Its fully federated architecture lets you host your own server while communicating seamlessly across a global, decentralized network — eliminating vendor lock-in and single points of failure.
End-to-end encryption is built-in by default, providing strong, device-to-device security that protects sensitive data. This is essential for organizations and individuals who demand confidentiality.
Matrix’s extensive bridging ecosystem enables integration with Slack, IRC, Telegram, Signal, and more, allowing cross-platform communication without forcing users to switch apps. Zulip lacks this versatility and remains limited to its own silo.
Backed by active development, governmental and institutional adoption, and a robust open-source community, Matrix is future-proof and scalable for both private and enterprise use.
In contrast, Zulip’s centralized model, lack of federation, and absence of native E2EE make it less suitable for privacy-conscious or distributed teams. If you want a secure, flexible, and truly decentralized communication platform, Matrix is the superior choice.
What are the advantages of Zulip compared to Matrix?
