Peertube audio-only transcoding with HLS, AV1, VP9 Transcoding - 2024 roadmap
-
Currently, Peertube doesn't support audio only transcoding with HLS (HTTP Live Stream). Support for this feature is on the Peertube roadmap for 2024, though.
If you are in this thread, you might also like to know or be aware that currently AV1 encoded livestreams do not have the metadata that will trigger the showing of a livestream on Peertube. Hopefully, this will be supported later this year too.
Could we just hear from Cloudron whether the way ffmpeg is included supports VP9 and AV1 transcode.

We can always install a custom ffmpeg as per requirements of peertube, it's not a problem. Hardware support for transcoding is a different beast though (of which I don't have much idea about)

On AMD, RDNA3 capable CPUs can do great transcoding. Contabo have AMD Ryzen 9 7900 VPS which can do AV1 encode.
Peertube also supports runners, so you can send your transcoding to another server for transcoding. There is some great new kit for video transcoding now:
