I only had a very quick look but it looks like Athens is like Anytype in that it's not actually a server thing at all, no? i.e. I think it's just a desktop app, not a web app, no?

Athens is pretty cool, but it doesn't have an api or any kind of server side component. I tried to package it for cloudron a couple weeks ago ( https://source.infogulch.com/infogulch/athens-app ) before I discovered this. logseq is in the same boat.
It's now clear that you can also self-host Athens on a server. The Github repo says "You can use Athens as a local desktop app that saves data to your filesystem or with a self-hosted server."

In my profession I’ve recently been assimilated into the Notion universe. It’s truly brilliant.
But it’s not free (as in freedom). So as I start to pour huge amount of work into structuring and using it, my woes of lock-in comes as expected.
There’s this whole new class of digital tools flexible enough to be shaped by non-coders for virtually any workflow: Notion, Airtable, Coda, Next Matter.
I sense that as the tools of this no-code movement develops further, users realize they don’t need to settle for other people’s workflow but can shape the tools to their liking instead of the other way around. Thus these tools may lay the groundwork for a new level of user expectancy, possibly leaving old rigid tools in the dust.
So, is there anything FOSS that can even begin to compare to Notion?
@yusf I had only a quick look at notion, but it seems like it helps co-ordinate various functions in a way similar to Odoo (or Flectra, a fork of Odoo), both of which have been requested in the App Wishlist. Flectra was created with the goal of being as Free as possible.

@loudlemur Tried both,, was disappointed that all the good stuff is kept out of the free version and reserved for the cloud hosted version. I suggest EspoCRM is a better faster, easier framework to work with anyway if you're after that sort of thing.

@loudlemur There is, but you will have to learn Python to do any useful customisations. The Odoo Studio, which is the most useful thing, is only available on the Cloud edition. There's so much missing from Flectra, I don't know why anyone would.

Reading all discussions here about Notion, which the OP is more than 3 years old, and as usual sometimes we tend to forget that time goes fast, but technology development goes even faster!
One thing must be understood about Notion is that, from the OP time there really was absolutely nothing like it and not even to compare to. Period. The only way to know that, is by having a somewhat deep dive into it as a trial. For at least a couple of hours, with a free account and start exploring Notion Templates. You'll be on your ...
Now, the 'mistake' we all often do is "judging a book by its cover", and so we often tend also to judge of the capacity of an app by the screenshots we're presented with. I do that too, and my first impression of Notion was not 'impressive'
Until you put your hands on it, once. What's unique (verily) about Notion is HOW things are implemented for you to do things. Without needing to connect several apps together in the first place, to achieve (at first glance) what could be achieved with all the apps in Cloudron as it has been suggested.
So, the reality is that, what was under the cover here that cannot be compared, is not WHAT you can achieve by using either Cloudron Apps or Notion. The reality that cannot be compared is HOW the workflow will be proceeded to achieve your goal, using one or another.
Of course, that never excludes that both can be used to achieve one's objectives. And, as usual and with the wave around here, a real FOSS ALTERNATIVE TO NOTION is what would be interesting to add to the Cloudron apps stack. Nothing less.

As explained here on their blog, AppFlowy can now be self-hosted on Supabase (an open source alternative to Firebase) and anyone is free to try it out with a free Supabase account. NOW, what's very exciting, is that Supabase can also be self-hosted using ... ... Docker!
IMHO, AnyType is also great. However, I think it's an app much apart. I'm not saying this as a negative way. In the contrary, IPFS is amazing only one must be conscious that IPFS is what's in the back end of this app, which makes it an app in its own class. Nevertheless, the app is absolutely GREAT. One must try it as well.
