Email configuration help with Nextcloud Mail

I have Thunderbird working fine connecting to my mail server, but I can't get Nextcloud Mail to connect with the exact same settings. IT reports that the server doesn't support TLS:
Roundcube also reports that SMTP does not support STARTTLS
But on a whim, I tried anyway, and it worked?
But thunderbird connects fine with the same settings - I can send and recieve mailm and SPF/DKIM/DMARC is all good:
