    Like the title suggests, im looking to migrate the email portion of Cloudron onto another VM. Is it possible without manually migrating with imap to imap?

    @dylightful Just looking for some clarification... are you looking to setup a second Cloudron instance on a new server, and have that Cloudron dedicated to mail-only for example? Does the other Cloudron server intend to run apps too?

    Reason I'm asking is that my understanding is you can't really split roles up between servers for the same domain. In other words, it's not really feasible to have one Cloudron server hosting the website for example.com and another Cloudron server hosting the mail for example.com. My understanding is that everything related to the domain needs to be handled on each server.

    I guess what I'm really saying here is that if your intent is to separate roles/duties between servers, it shouldn't really be done that way and instead should be done in a way where you're separating domains per server.

    Just food for thought. But if I've totally misunderstood your use-case, please clarify it and I can try again. 🙂

    @d19dotca The main reason is due to OVH's terrible IP reputation. The OVH dedi im paying for is fantastic value for money, especially for the amount of apps i can fit on it.
    Migrating the mail portion of a dedi to a VPS with a reputable provider is my end goal.

    @d19dotca But yes.

    OVH Dedi: Applications and Storage
    VPS Provider: Dedicated mail Cloudron

    I think in that case it may be simpler and cheaper to just look for a mail relay instead of splitting up the installation. Just have a look at the out of the box selectable providers in the Cloudron ui, in the past there were also some recommended here on the forum, like https://www.mailjet.de/.

    I cannot find the post, but a while ago I read that for a future Cloudron version the mail and box (basically the dashboard, users, information about installed apps, configuration) backups will be separated. This is done for the upcoming support of multi host cloudrons. So if you really want to go the way if splitting up your cloudron, this may be worth waiting for.

    If you cannot/dont want to wait then the easiest is to probably setup a new cloudron from scratch, recreate your users and then just rsync the maildir folder from your old installation to the new one.

    Out of interest, why would it not be feasible to split domains between hosting and email? We do this without any problems. On the servers hosting the apps either outbound mail is set to relay via the server handling email or, if the app manages its own email settings, these are set to use the SMTP on the server handling email for the domain.

    I may have misunderstood but I think this post is why I was under that impression that the Cloudron domains emails should be on the same server as the apps for that same domain.
