    Hi,

I decided to stop using DigitalOcean where I had previously run my Cloudron instances.

Now I am trying to get Cloudron set up on an older Lenovo thinkpad running Ubuntu 15.

I realize my Ubuntu version is outdated by I am also having apt-get update, upgrade, and installation errors, which I cannot seem to resolve.

Of course I could burn the latest version of Ubuntu and reinstall it - but I have sensitive data on my current machine and want to avoid this if possible.

If I explained my Ubuntu upgrade problems in detail, can someone on the Forum, Girish or Nebulon or others, possibly lend a hand?

I will try to get the update/upgrade error details listed as soon as possible.

Oh I see - it really is an issue with not accessing installation repositories. I need to do more digging

@wexlerj That is a huge jump... 15 -> 18. I fear your request might be beyond what can be offered here. I've been through the same myself and in the end I always just get an external disk, back up all my data, and then just start fresh with 18.04. That will probably be quickest and easiest for you.

Cloudron has never supported Ubuntu 15 and given that Ubuntu 16 itself has reached EOL, it's not possible to add support for such old ubuntu releases. Are you able to use Ubuntu 18 on your server instead?

@scooke Thanks you are technically exactly right but I really can't go ahead and do this like I always have done in the past because of the sensitive data on my machine.
After a bit of thought, probably a better solution would be to get another cheap machine to actually run Cloudron with the latest version of Ubuntu.
I saw a little while ago that @girish was using something quite fancy to run Cloudron locally, but perhaps I can get something simpler.
Hardware specs to run the latest Ubuntu are probably pretty cheap at this point.

@girish Hi girish. I think I answered this question in my response to @scooke. Thanks.
I agree Ubuntu 15 is old. I wish it could be easily updated but it seems broken at this point, so getting another machine seems like a must for Cloudron.
Good riddance to DigitalOcean as far as I am concerned. I had a long run with them. Six years or so. Time for a change.
@girish might you have a relatively cheap hardware configuration suggestion for running Cloudron right now?

A reasonable NUC sized device with an x68 CPU will do just fine. I run Cloudron on a ASRock Beebox N3000 and it works great for my needs.

@wexlerj I run my Cloudron off a pretty modest server at home. I got a Lenovo ThinkCenter m600 from a startup that went under for 100 bucks.

If it matters: I am actually looking to upgrade my server in near future because it's not so good for video transcoding despite having VAAPI. Any more than 1 stream or trying to transcode 1080p it really struggles.

Another reason why this would have been a bad idea is that Cloudron is designed to be installed on a freshly installed system and take over full control of the machine. When you say its a laptop, then this could imply that you already (apart from that "sensitive data") also a desktop environment and other applications already installed on the system. All these are very likely to collide with future operation of said system as a Cloudron host.

Another critical question if I may. Is this now your fifth or sixth account on this forum or did I miss some in between? Why are you constantly deleting your user account whenever you shift your focus to something else and why is it always some variation of your name when coming back?

@fbartels Well if you have a problem with my shifting focus I will just never read this forum again. Who made you the police?
