+1 for Contabo. UI/UX is archaic but it does the job and it does it well.

I guess if you want the fancy interfaces (DO and Vultr), you have to pay the fancy prices! LOL

I've only tried them for the Object Storage but quickly regretted that as they don't even support virtual host style URLs, only path style, see:

      https://docs.contabo.com/docs/products/Object-Storage/technical-description/

      (and this post)

I am looking around for VPS providers that can offer a generous amount of RAM for a reasonable price.

Linode seems to have become a bit more expensive with new Akamai management.

Contabo don't support easy Cloudron installment at the moment.

Vultr are good but is there anything better?

Netcup are quite generous with RAM relative to most

          d037d882-4251-441f-8924-65e5d565ca25-image.png

But depending on how much you're looking to spend it might be better to opt for a dedicated server from Hetzner which start at €44.39 with 64GB RAM (I'm planning on moving various of my VPSs onto one of those as soon as I can find the time to get around to it, and after checking the health of the IP of the new server, once I've got it).

Absolutely wow! 64GB RAM?! That is quite an amazing looking deal. How good are Hetzner with helping people setup their Cloudron? I wasn't familiar with netcup. Here is Vultr at the moment for their Memory optimized servers:

I don't know, but it's just copy/ pasting 3 lines of code so I'm not sure how much help most people here really need?

@LoudLemur Hetzner's super easy. Their control panel does everything, so never had a reason to contact them. Tried Netcup once, seem to remember the control panel being clunky and having to contact them for various things. Contabo always been reliable for me, too. I don't think you can go wrong with any, but I heard here that Netcup has lockin-periods, so watchout for that.

I don't think I've ever had to contact them either and the UI is by far the best I've seen (not that I've tried that many), makes everything super easy.

I think it's more that you have to pay 6 months in advance rather than lock-in periods. If you cancel before 6 months you get a refund.

Although actually, in some ways you're right: their best prices as displayed above are actually the 12 month contract deals. They charge a bit more for monthly contract, and also for choosing which location you want:

Netcup always has special offers on the last Tuesday of the month. You might find something interesting there.

There is also the 30-day money-back guarantee, then only the actual term of the VPS is charged and the rest is then returned.

Thanks for mentioning that! How nice that NextCloud calendar is sophisticated enough to support "last x day of the month" reccurancy.

I've been running my Cloudron on a 48GB SSDNodes server for years and never had a problem - hosting all my own regularly/daily+ apps like Bitwarden, email, Vikunja, Paperless-ngx, at least 5 WP sites, Umami, a bunch of federated apps, plus Matrix/Element... really, my most important self-hosted online digital life is on this SSDNodes. I've only ever had one issue, that was with a Mastodon app that couldn't find it's backup (never resolved, actually), but I could rescue it by relying on SSDNodes built-in full disk backup. I just restored to one of those daily backups, and it went off without a hitch. So, like many of the VPS providers, if you get lucky, you won't complain.

But I also use Hosthatch, Wishosting for my EasyPanel instance, and another Wishosting for my Yunohost instance, and even a 3rd Wishosting VPS for my Umbrel install, Servarica for my FileRun instance, OVHCloud-KS-1 (KimSufi) for my Minio install, a few RackNerd servers for my Presearch instances and a Ghost-only server ('cause their whole install/udate process is sooo smooth now), and finally an EthernetServers VPS for my old LAMP instance that I just don't have the heart to stop using.

I could include referal links if you wish.

Zero. Hetzner does exactly what is provided under their terms of service/contract and nothing on top for free. Their prices are just possible due to a very strict management/customer handling. Anything on top costs extra.

I stopped using nextcloud as my file store (didn't need the bloat that comes with nextcloud) in favour of SeaFile. But considering a change.

@timconsidine I used FileRun for a while - it’s great and faster than Nextcloud for syncing. BUT: It’s only one developer AFAIK. And Nextcloud is so ubiquitous and used by government agencies etc. that I believe security issues are discovered much earlier than for a „niché“ product - something to consider for important sevices.

@timconsidine I like it. It updates easy (now). And I tend to upload large amounts of files to the folder... and FileRun catalogues it all nice for me. That's the best part, for me. I've fiddled with ResourceSpace, and in fact may install that on my LAMP VPS, just to check it out again. I stuck with FileRun because it is faster than ResourceSpace.

I'm a long-time user of Linode and have been satisfied with their service. However, I have to admit I have some reservations about the Akamai acquisition. I hope they can keep up the same level of service that we've come to expect from them.

I use BuyVM and Hetzner. I've used Digital Ocean in the past.

I use BuyVM for cheap storage that is not all that slow. It's hybrid storage, so it's about $5/TB, and it gets a speed of about 300 MB/sec (only slightly difficult thing is that you have to learn to auto-mount the storage, but this isn't terribly difficult). This is definitely enough speed for a small to medium email server. They are slightly less reliable than the other options (about once every 2-3 months, I have the box go down for an hour or so, and have to restart the server), but they have better support than the rest (you can actually talk to the person who runs the business), so it balances out.

I use Hetzner for NextCloud, because it demands a much higher storage speed in order to feel really 'snappy'. Their SSDs reach about 1600 MB/sec, so it's quite a bit faster, but also more expensive (basically $50/TB). Also, for some reason, I found that even after asking them to enable email, that their servers throttle POP and IMAP responses a lot. I don't suggest running email on them unless you are doing webmail. Their VPSs are very reliable though. Have not tried their full servers.

Digital Ocean is just pretty standard. Slightly expensive and very reliable, so their boxes do the trick if you don't need space.

Also... I forgot to mention this... but thank you Cloudron Team for putting in a 'Disk Speed' option into the Cloudron System UI. It's the best! 😄
