Has anyone ever had their services disrupted due to a natural event like this, either remotely or locally? It was rather scary watching things shake, and just when I thought, oh oh, maybe we better get out of here, it stopped.

Yes, funnily for me it was the same. I was with a travel group in Nepal about a year after their last big quake. We were staying in a hotel that took some damage and was in the process of being rebuilt.
Took only a few moments and everybody in our group was a bit freaked by it, while the employees in the hotel were like "yeah, that was no big deal".
