After a recent conversation with @marcusquinn and some research on my part, it seems this crazy idea is possible.

Univention Corporate Server as a Container

For those unfamiliar with Univention, it's an open source server manager with apps, which has a few apps Cloudron doesn't yet.

If integrated as a Cloudron App we'd have the best of both worlds!

Unfortunately UCS does not really play well in a container. Especially not under the read-only constraint of Cloudron. Plus most of the ucs apps are also docker based, and docker in docker is no fun.

But the best is: ucs and cloudron can perfectly coexist. Ucs is meant to run in a private network, in your office for example. From there you expose a port for ldaps to the IP of your cloud hosted cloudron and configure it to use ucs as it's ldap source.

@fbartels My thinking here is to use Sysbox from Nestybox.

It makes DinD possible and pleasant as well as strong system and network isolation.

The above video details how it does work in a container.

It could open a portal to another dimension of The Simulation.

Sadly that was just a conference talk and running ucs in a container is not really practical.

As we get Sysbox into Cloudron as a default runc, that will enable many more of these use cases.
