I rocked my iphone XR for at least 5 years and then inherited the iphone SE 2nd gen (it's a downgrade spec wise, but I liked having a tiny phone), but it's starting to show its age. The pixel 10 has 6 years of guaranteed updates as of today. I got it for $520 using the 10% off referral code I mentioned above. If I keep it for 5 years, that's $104/yr ($87/yr if kept for 6 years).

Things must be really different in the UK. eBay US for used pixels 8-9s were more expensive than a new 10 or they were "for parts". The cheapest mobile plan I know of here is Tello for $8/mo (2GB data + 300 mins of calling + unlimited texts). I'm pretty sure the service is subpar. I'm with T-mobile prepaid and pay $15/mo for unlimited call/text + 5GB data. Coverage is perfect no matter where I travel in the US.

For me, the upgrade was mostly due to the iphone SE issues/shortcomings:

• small battery; running out of juice midday
• recurring signal/connectivity issues; mostly bugs that apple fixes/breaks with each update
• sluggish performance; opening element took a solid 10s to load on the screen
• siri; dumb as a brick
• it's apple; i made a mistake once and got sucked into their ecosystem, time to get out!

BTW, a video I watched yesterday mentioned that the pixel 10 is the last pixel supported on grapheneos and that they're looking to support a new device lineup instead. They will continue to support the current pixels until their promised end date though, so that's good.

Correction: The pixel 10 is NOT the last pixel to be supported. GrapheneOS's partnership with Motorola is an expansion to their supported devices, not a Pixel replacement.

LineageOS support is community-driven and not fixed like manufacturer support schedules. Key points:LineageOS generally maintains two active major versions at a time. Devices that are not updated (ported) to one of the two latest versions are dropped from active support.

Current active branches (as of mid-2026) center around LineageOS 23.x (based on Android 16).
Longevity depends heavily on volunteer maintainers. Popular devices (especially Google Pixels) often receive 4–8+ years of updates because they’re easier to maintain (closer to AOSP) and have strong community interest.

@humpty I was pleasantly surprised that newer flip phones have all manner of niceties in their firmware including WiFi and Tethering (as in sharing the cell connection) built right in.

It's almost smart but still dumb with only T9 entry.

What mail app do you use for your Cloudron mailserver that has instant IMAP sync/push on Android?

Edit: I need to expand on this request. Need app replacement for the following iOS apps:

• Reminders
• Notes (thinking Joplin will do)
• Calendar (how do you sync Nextcloud calendar in Graphene?)
• Photos (a private/no-cloud app; obviously the pixel/google ones won't do)
• Findmy (is it possible to still connect/see my fam's iOS phones/gps?)

@nostrdev Yep! I got grapheneos running on a pixel 10. I'm moving from iOS so I'm looking for apps to replace what I had been using.

One more request to add to the list, caller ID/spam filtering. In iOS, there's a feature to send unknown calls to voicemail. I activated my e-sim on the pixel this morning and I've already received 5 spam calls today (that went through!). I activated DND and allowed only starred contacts to ring, but there's got to be a better way.

Our recommendation is to use a data-only e-sim (eg silent.link) and ditch the phone number. If you need SMS for 2FA, just use a web provider such as crypton.sh

GOS journey update:

So many things that "just worked" in iOS requires a bridge, an extra app, or some hack to get to work.

some of the mess I ran into so far:

• google blocking my new gmail account and messing up with installing/setting up apps
• having to replace apps like findmy, notes, reminders, MAPS, visual voicemail (still not working), list is long..
• learning about all available non-google stores and their pros/cons
• GOS stock is UGLY so I had to find a new launcher but Nova Launcher is dead so more HW and settled on Lawnchair.
• pixel cam app required another service/app install from github so that you can click on the thumbnail of a newly taken image to view it. Otherwise, you'd have to switch apps.
• getting nextcloud calendar to sync with fossify calendar app required davx5 (one more app)
  

oh, and if an app is available in multiple stores, they ALL show the app as installed and can be updated. I'm lost where I got each app from. I believe the only true way to tell is to go into the app details section in the OS settings and see where the package came from. MORE MANUAL WORK. **** reinsert dwight raging ****

No login needed to save/boomark or follow any youtube channel/video. You can also download videos but I can't seem to find the file location. Must be a permission issue on my end. WTV.

I have a lot of hw to do regarding app permissions, specifically Google app permissions. Knowing myself, I'll shoot myself in the foot and give Google more permission than needed, rendering the whole GOS setup moot
