@fbartels Looks much much better than Discourse.

@jdaviescoates Discourse to me is a nightmare to get going. I mean, to set up topics and create a proper forum. The experience of this forum is just so much more straightforward than the other Discourse instances/forums I have either been on, or tried setting up myself.
Just giving hats off to the Cloudron staff for a good choice as Discourse I think is much more conventionally popular than NodeBB is it seams.

FWIW, we chose NodeBB because we are more comfortable with nodejs than rails 🙂 Discourse is also a beast to install (and maintain).

We have since also discovered that the NodeBB team is incredibly responsive (the co-founder Julian also drops by this forum now and then). I think the main issue we have is the incredible amount of bogus users creating accounts. We do have a captcha and my understanding is that there are real human-bots out there bypassing captcha creating accounts and creating spam. The comments from these users are also very fine tuned. They would reply to random threads saying "I tried this but it didn't know. Can xx tell me what is the way to fix this". Things like that, sometimes we even delete legitimate posts by mistake!

You can see https://forum.cloudron.io/users on how much spam is out there. I have been meaning to write a script that auto-delete users using some heuristic.

For any that remember the bad old days of 90's/00's forums, Discourse' UI is a breath of fresh air to the whole space and forced many existing forum softwares to modernize. (Potentially including this one.) From that perspective, Discourse did the whole online community a great service.

That said, the hosting-difficulty perspective does not lean in favor of Discourse.

Totally agree with this. It really changed the forum scene for the good! I have also found some of the https://invisioncommunity.com/ forums to be quite nice as a user, though I have never had the opportunity to manage/maintain such a forum. I had high hopes for flarum but it's stuck in beta forever.

Although Cloudron solves that pretty nicely 🙂

@jdaviescoates An example, I guess, of a "bogus user" that Girish was talking about earlier!

@jdaviescoates I had a bad experience when I was working with Discourse when I made a request for an alternative backup option besides AWS. They would not even listen to me to add Dropbox as a possibility at the time.

@timconsidine You can use whatcms.org to check any site you want to know what platform/CMS they use. Just copy the site URL you want and paste it in whatcms and it'll do a quick scan and let you know.
