PTR settings incorrect after switching VPS provider
-
I switched hosting of my VPS from DigitalOcean to Google and now my PTR record is incorrect. Any tips on how to correct this?
@christiaan The PTR record is also called the "reverse-DNS". It is set by your hosting provider. Most of them have an option in their admin interface to set it manually to whatever you want. Some don't. You should go look into the admin interface there !

@christiaan you see a grey circle with a question mark click it and the information is there.

Actually we do not have docs about how to do this with Google VPS provider. @christiaan if you figure that out, maybe you could make some screenshots and let us know how to do that in Google and we will add it to the docs.

On GCE, you cannot send email directly from the server. They block outbound port 25. See https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/tutorials/sending-mail/ . This means you have to set a mail relay for the server to send email. When you set an email relay, the PTR setup is not required.
So, the correct fix for your problem is to setup a relay and ignore the PTR warning for now.

All I currently have is a simple HTML website and Nextcloud running for calendars and contacts, so I probably don't even need to the server to send email, right? In which case I just ignore the PTR warning.

@christiaan For nextcloud, the calendar app does send your reminders by email for events (there are some options when you create an event). But if you don't care about that, you can ignore the PTR warning.

@christiaan On linode, if you are a new account, you can usually open a support ticket and explain your use case of email hosting to them and they usually unblock port 25.
