Change Domain Matrix/Element
-
Good question! I’d love to know the answer to this. I don’t think that it would change the user’s matrix domain/id though. The first issue I can think of is encryption related and how that would cause the whole app/user/validation structure to fall apart.

@SebGG the apps won't work anymore if you change the location. The id will change but it loses track of previous IDs i.e all your federated contacts won't know about it. Maybe all the rooms local to the server continue to work. Generally, one should not change Domain Post Installation. This is not supported by matrix

@msbt right...
"Nothing has changed since 2018, it is still not possible to rename a server once it has done anything useful (eg sent a message, joined any room), please do not attempt to rename your server by manual database operations."

Hey, i'm back in this again....
In the meantime i installed a second matrix/element installation on a another domain. After setting it up i was able to invite the people from the second domain into the the rooms of the first domain. This works only if on both servers federation is active. So the content of the first domain server rooms is now also available on the second server domain.
In the next step i want to migrate all users to the second domain server by inviting. After this is done i want to close the first server domain.
Here my question: If all users are now logged in at the second server domain and all chats are available for the users on the second domain, can i stop the first server domain? Or is there any short coming?
Thanks in advance
first domain = current matrix server with users which are using this for 3 year now with a lot of content
second domain = new matrix server on a new domain -
So the content of the first domain server rooms is now also available on the second server domain.
I suspect this only works because it's a room? If you had personal chats with other people, it probably doesn't show up. My understanding is (was?) that there is no way to move data from your previous domain to the new one.
