Is there a reason not to use the cheapest option? Once you set up the nameservers to your server, aren't you basically done with whatever company you choose?

I use porkbun for that reason - they are cheap.

        @ekevu123

Some reasons i consider are :
1- Is the company is strong enought to last, so i don't have to change every year
        2- The price
3- Reseller / auction service to buy / sell domain is nice to have

Personally I'd add stuff about their values and ethics too. Do they care about free software/ open source, privacy, freedom of expression and the climate emergency? That sort of thing.

Hence why https://www.freethought.uk/ that @avatar1024 mentioned are interesting.

And in their own but different way, people like https://1984.hosting/ too. And I guess that's why @mononym likes https://njal.la/ too (e.g. due to their concern about privacy)

And also why Gandi's No Bullshit stuff is good.

I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner

I use OVHcloud as it’s one of the few that invoice in my local currency, so it helps with exchange rates. With the low Canadian dollar against the USD, it’s even more helpful in helping me money. Plus it has a nice feature of allowing zone file editing directly.

I have namecheap for well over a decade, never had a single issue, once when I accidentally allowed a domain to lapse they recovered it quickly for me.

Hi @jrl-abstract27, what has been your decision? Are you sticking with Gandi, or trying another (please not gd).

Definitely Cloudflare if .com, .net etc... Can't beat their pricing! For other domain extensions, Namesilo.

@scooke after searching yes, i ll stick to Gandi, i do like their "no bullshit" values. I considered godaddy and resellerclub.com for a little while but not worth it for the moment.

Since i use a lot ghost who want the open web -> https://activitypub.ghost.org/, I don't consider Cloudflare, because i don't want to centralise internet.

                      Best,

@Rahul If they support the TLD, then cloudflare.

@Rahul Never any of those three. NEVER. The ones you should choose from are listed above (I left out a few simply because op doesn't appear to use crypto, nor have need for super-privacy):

                            Dynadot.com
                            Cloudflare.com
                            Gandi.net
Porkbun, namesilo, dynodot, spaceship, and namecheap
                            OVH
