Audacity to add telemetry to track its users. Time to find an alternative, folks.

Telemetry is not evil per se (depending how it’s done and if it’s communicated) but often a legitimate way to e.g. learn which features users like and which are not or rarely used or where user struggle with finding features… And Audacity in particular could use some streamlining!

@necrevistonnezr By using Google Analytics and Yandex Metricas, it's like they are actively looking for a backlash.

            Totally deserved, IMHO.

@necrevistonnezr It's not what but whom they chose to use is the real issue here. If a non-coder like me can install Ackee and put in some effort to have tracking without compromising the privacy of my visitors then so can they if they cared or wanted to.

Sounds like this may not happen now...

It's true they've implemented DARK THEME and it's very nice! πŸ™‚

That said, thanks for the heads up but no panic here, read again, telemetry is optional and disabled by default.

As per the "alternative folks", there's none in the FOSS line, if you know one let us know, but I doubt very much. The next big thing is pro software in the like of Adobe Audition.

@micmc https://www.ocenaudio.com/features comes to mind. Has been always been free though not Open Source. For easy editing and effects, I actually prefer it over Audacity. Mostly for the less ugly UI πŸ™‚

I could tell why, first Audacity is not that 'ugly' but moreover it's absolutely NOT comparable to Audacity, because ocenaudio doesn't even have the half of a quarter of a bit of the features of Audacity, it's not even worth mentioning in my humble opinion.

But thanks for sharing anyway πŸ™‚

Some news after the update of the Audacity privacy policy page a few days ago. You can read this article on Fosspost Audacity is now a Possible Spyware, Remove it ASAP and the discussion about a possible fork on Github.

The DARK THEME has been implemented, and it is very nice! That being said, thanks for the heads up but there is no need to panic. Telemetry is an optional setting that defaults to disabled. As far as alternate folks go, there are none in the Free Software line. Pro software such as Adobe Audition is the next big thing. My preference is Audacity over it when it comes to editing and effects.
