Despite using CLoudron for years, I often misspell it! You can see two of my most common mistakes (here in this post and title) when I am trying to type out Cloudron.

I've been typing it Cloudron, but I keep thinking CloudTRON 🙂

I guess it should be CloudRon 🤔 I think the origin of the name was mentioned in the blog. I'll have to give it a read again.

I've always liked the name, and I'm fussy with names. Cloudron ages well.

If it were me, I'd 301 redirect cloudron.io URLs to cloudron.com though.

.com is still the OG for credibility and trust.

We bought cloudron.com only recently (2 years ago or so), we will switch at some point.

Cloudtron is definitely most common. I think CloudIron and Cloudrun are second.

I think I have only mispelled it once: cloduron

But I am reminded of this mistake often as objectstorage-test-for-cloduron is the name of the S3 bucket I have been using for for over a year.

It also reminds me that Cloudron things often just work from the get go.
I will use something shorter and without mistakes when I move to a different provider.

The name is excellent. And congratulations on having the .com.

I think it's the vowels which disturb the brain-fingers interaction - maybe just go with CLDRN ?

Might be "Clodron" somewhere, no? That's how I misspell it sometimes, though now with this reply I was about to type "Coldron". I guess this is when the server is very quiet, then you get a "Coldron" 👅

Could you build a few pages into the main Cloudron website with Cloudtron, Cloudrun as the main words? Have these automatically redirect to the main Cloudron landing page?

I love Cloudron, but my initial reaction to the name choice was not particularly positive, as "being in the cloud" was what I didn't want. Self-hostable was more in my mind. Having a name end in "ron" was a bit kind of cheesy, I thought too, somewhat outdated, like "a-doo-ron-ron-ron, a doo-ron-ron" era, and old fashioned, 1950s way of making something sound like it it was a computer. AI now is good at generating names for products, or roleplay characters, by the way.

The Cloudron.io domain I actually do like for a couple of reasons. I believe the .io country domain helps the people of the Indian Ocean islands gain some revenue. I also think .io is still cool, with the input/output vibe and it has come to denote that it is a more modern organization than one of those .com companies that all went bust in the naughties.

Here are some quick AI names just as an example:

I can assure you, there was not a lot of market or brand research happening for Cloudron. I guess I never expected it to be in use for so long, actually. Somehow it stuck with us. As far as I remember, as a non-native speaker I quite liked the term cauldron back then. So together with "Cloud", some container where you blend apps together to your own liking.

@LoudLemur .io is controversial, specifically because the people of the Indian Ocean don't get the income.

I didn't know that. Thanks! I thought that some brilliant person had conceived the idea and that the Indian Ocean Islands government would receive a cut of the money from the use of their country domain. But you say that this is not happening? What a rip off that is! Also, those .io fees are quite hefty, and now it transpires that the islanders are not benefitting...

                                      Thanks for letting us know!

That is super interesting to know. It's good to see how the name came to be.

If you ever started branding open source apps (like that French co does), -ron might work well:

                                        Bookstackron

@LoudLemur it is highly recommended to verify if those suggested domain names are truly available, because it might not be the case. Unless, you've prompted your AI to verify their availability as well.
