  • Subdomain CNAME alias to Heroku DNS still ends up at Cloudron
    M meaculpa

    Oh boi. False alarm.

Seems like it just needed some time to propagate the DNS stuff.
It's working now. I Allready waited the whole night for it to happen.
Just now as I wrote the thread it propagated.

Im leaving this here in case anyone needs to do a similar task.
@mods feel free to delete if not appropriate.

    Thanks all!

  • Subdomain CNAME alias to Heroku DNS still ends up at Cloudron
    M meaculpa

    Hello fellow Cloudron users,

I'm a bit lost with this DNS issue I have, and hope someone can lend me a helping hand.

    Case:

I have an additional domain set up in cloudron to host a landing page on the base domain "example.com" and also to receive emails. Working fine.

Now i want to point a sub-domain "app.example.com" to a heroku dyno on the DNS level.
I added a CNAME pointing to the Heroku DNS.

    If I test it with:

    host app.example.com

    i get:

    app.example.com has address <Cloudron Server IP>
app.example.com is an alias for xyz.herokudns.com.

    My question:
Does the wildcard (*) A record pointing to my Cloudron IP beat the CNAME alias I set?
Does anyone have experience with a similar use case?
Is there maybe a better way to do it?

When I open app.example.com in a browser i get to the http version showing me "You found a Cloudron out in the wild!"

Not sure how to proceed here...
I'd greatly appreciate a pointer in the right direction.

    Thanks in any case!!

@fbartels Hey, no, not at all. I'm just curious to try it and maybe learn packaging a cloudron app on the way.

  • How did everyone discover Cloudron?
    M meaculpa

I discovered Cloudron through my hosting provider Netcup. I tried the free version, was very pleased with the ease of use for setting up domains, subdomains and especially email (which was a lot of headache when I tried setting up on my own). Went back to self-managing my server... then purchased Cloudron premium when I was sick of wasting so much of my (free) time when setting up projects for friends. Now I'm happy ever since :-)! The killer feature for me is the external backup. So quick and easy to set up! Big thank you to the team and the maintainers!

I can confirm that, now that the lifecycle settings are correct, backups get physically deleted from B2.

@girish Holy moly, this is why they charge less than other providers, cause they keep all the data around forever as the default.

Thank you very much for helping me solve this third-party issue! Maybe this hint could be added to the backup docs.

I made the settings according to your suggestion and will observe if it works.

    Thanks again!!

  • Disk almost full since external backup (Ubuntu / Swap)
    M meaculpa

@girish I just waited another backup cycle to doubl check, but the backups really pile up on Backblaze.

The Cloudron Backup Listing shows only the recent two Backups (I have 1 backup per day and 2 days retention policy configured).

When i clean manually, like you suggested it does not throw any errors, I just get

    box:tasks setCompleted - 277: {"result":{"removedBoxBackupIds":[],"removedAppBackupIds":[]},"error":null}

To throw in some numbers, I have ~110gb occupied on my server, and the bucket on Backblaze is at ~600gb.

    I use encrypted tarballs.

If I can do anything ot help debug, pleas let me know!

    Hey @nebulon ,
the local storage problem was solved, but now the backups fill up on Backblaze: old backups are not getting deleted from my bucket automatically. I have my retention policy set to 2 days, but older backups remain on the cloud storage. Did I miss something again, or is this automatic behaviour not intended?
    Thanks for your help again!

    M meaculpa

    Hey,

I made my first external backup (6+ apps) to Backblaze using encrypted tarballs for my apps, and my local server backup space was freed, but now my "Everything else (Ubuntu, Swap...)" disk usage grew +200 gb... I guess these are the local compressed files?

Will this space be freed on the next backup cycle? or will it freeze my disk? im a bit concerned and switched to rsync for now but it might result in higher backup costs.

Do I have to free this space manually? If yes, where can I find the potential disk fillers?

I dont want to recover from full disk 🙂

    Thanks for the help!!

    Plausible light weight analytics:

    Self-hosting Beta announcement:
    https://plausible.io/blog/self-hosted-web-analytics-beta

It would be great to see this app come to Cloudron - seems like a great, light weight alternative to already existing Matomo.
Actually I'd be interested to help packaging this as a Cloudron app. From my point of understanding, it should be possible to bring this app to Cloudron, correct me if I'm wrong 🙂

    Cheers!
