I use BuyVM and Hetzner. I've used Digital Ocean in the past. I use BuyVM for cheap storage that is not all that slow. It's hybrid storage, so it's about $5/TB, and it gets a speed of about 300 MB/sec (only slightly difficult thing is that you have to learn to auto-mount the storage, but this isn't terribly difficult). This is definitely enough speed for a small to medium email server. They are slightly less reliable than the other options (about once every 2-3 months, I have the box go down for an hour or so, and have to restart the server), but they have better support than the rest (you can actually talk to the person who runs the business), so it balances out. I use Hetzner for NextCloud, because it demands a much higher storage speed in order to feel really 'snappy'. Their SSDs reach about 1600 MB/sec, so it's quite a bit faster, but also more expensive (basically $50/TB). Also, for some reason, I found that even after asking them to enable email, that their servers throttle POP and IMAP responses a lot. I don't suggest running email on them unless you are doing webmail. Their VPSs are very reliable though. Have not tried their full servers. Digital Ocean is just pretty standard. Slightly expensive and very reliable, so their boxes do the trick if you don't need space. Also... I forgot to mention this... but thank you Cloudron Team for putting in a 'Disk Speed' option into the Cloudron System UI. It's the best!

@jdaviescoates I am glad of that! I think it must have been some story relating to the Dutch farmers who are struggling with their government at the moment and having tractor demonstrations. Anyway, it is good fun to grow some food in the garden!

@marcusquinn said in Discord - Where did people go wrong?: @jegillikin-0 I think AI will bring more people into the terminal. I was recently looking at Twitter CLI projects, and already finding AI Shell rather useful for improving command line understanding. Hahaha, I have seen the future and it's Emacs.

From a recent response from the dev to an issue: If you wanted to run Quiet in headless mode that would be fairly easy to do, as this is how our integration tests work: https://github.com/TryQuiet/quiet/tree/develop/packages/integration-tests Also, feel free to email me and I can invite you to our existing Quiet community, if you'd like to talk about this idea further! h@tryquiet.org This should allow for packaging and testing on Cloudron! Would be really nice to have one private self-hosted non-centralized P2P messaging service with mobile apps on Cloudron.

@p44 sorry, I think I gave you the wrong script! That is meant only for zeroing out rest of the disk (like we do in 1-click images). To erase the entire disk, you probably have to do something else. My understanding is that atleast for VMs in public cloud, this is done automatically. This came up as a security issue in SSD servers a long time ago. VPS providers were not formatting them because it reduces life span of the disk. I guess as a hack, you can install plain ubuntu on the bare metal. And then, run the script command I posted earlier. Which probably has the same net effect as erasing. You have to run that command in the terminal/via ssh.

@scooke I definitely will! I decided to move when the previous downtime happened because of how they handle things but it's on the backburner until I have some free time. I didn't expect the VPS to go down again this soon. Sigh. I'll keep an eye out for the OVH deals, thanks!

Hi @apkdlpw, this is a very off topic question for the cloudron forum (or are you maybe a spam bot?). I think you can get better help for nextcloud topic in their own forum at https://help.nextcloud.com/.

Interesting, but doubt I'll use it as there aren't any filters for open source/ self hostable so most of it isn't relevant to me. Likely stick to looking at things like https://selfhosted.libhunt.com/ and https://alternativeto.net/ https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/ pretty useful too but I mostly forget about that one. Saying that, I do also sometimes look at stuff like: https://stackshare.io/collaboration https://stackshare.io/business_tools Just to see which tools are popular (and then look on the other sites to find open source and self hostable alternatives for them)

@robi said in Automate video uploads to several platforms?: streaming Streamyard seems to be the leader in this space https://streamyard.com/ But https://restream.io/ claim to stream to 30+ places (but I could quickly find a list of what that includes)

@humptydumpty the cached read -T option is not very useful in this case. Surely helps to have that fast but it is just cached.

@Santoz Forget Windows. I use a Bitami Wordpress VM. That way it stays on my local machine. No sense having it out there; if it got hacked, kiss ALL my sites bye. Did you have anything else to add?

@BrutalBirdie thank you. I'm not currently using cifs/sshfs for Cloudron. But that might explain something. I've re-configured my connections to the storage box and seems to be working now. Monitoring ...

@robi said in Contabo: New EU datacenter 100% green energy -- Coming 2024: @jdaviescoates You could set up an S3 gateway in front that does support path style with Minio. Thanks, but I'd rather just use providers that do support virtual host style. Very happy with Scaleway for my purposes

RIP current pricing as well, won't be long before it goes up. Lot's going to change over at Linode over the next 12 months.
