I like to grow my beard a bit during the winter, and like others have said, hydration and cleanliness. When you get tired of it though, get a Henson razor (hensonshaving d0tt c0m). I can attest that the company claims are 100% dead-on accurate. Got mine as a Christmas gift and the shaving experience went from having regular razor cuts/burns to almost none. It makes shitty blades cut like premium ones. Love the damn thing.

They look good, and reminded me of this article which I happened to read recently (even though I don't currently ever have a clean shave and so I just use a little electric clippers to trim - after many years of just using a small pair of scissors I lost the ones that were just right - which were actually a pair of disposable hospital scissors used for cutting bandages etc which my friend stole when she had a broken leg)

I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner

@jdaviescoates I grew up watching my grandpa use a straight razor. I wouldn't dare to use one myself. It's the most eco-friendly, but it's not for noobs. Not only do you have to learn how to use it (steady hands, right angle, etc.), you also have to keep it wicked sharp so there's maintenance involved which also has it's own learning curve. I went the double-edge safety razor route and switched razor brands over the years before settling on the Bic ones (made in Greece). I get at least 3 shaves per blade if left to grow or +7 shaves if used daily. Oh, the best part is being able to shave against the grain without irritation. Women LOVE a baby butt smooth face 😎

Must agree. I also use a double-sided razor but in as a knife like this:
            1f85ad80-5e15-4b13-8ea6-93b0084f9e46-image.png
and must say, no 3-4-5 Tri-Quad-Penta Super Extreme Skin Glide Care FooBaar Mach 5 Razor from Brand "I don't have beard but shave perfectly" in the ads is as skin friendly as a clean cut from a fresh razor blade.

@BrutalBirdie I get great lather with Barrister & Mann shaving soaps. My favorite is Seville. I've had to dump many products after looking them up using the Yuka app.

@humptydumpty thanks that looks like a useful app. I wish https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/ had an app. I should write to them and let them know. I think there are apps that would be similar but they they are the OGs (been doing this stuff since the 80s) have most of the best and up to date research (and are themselves a multi stakeholder co-op which I like too)

@jdaviescoates I didn't even know there were such apps until recently. It's such an eye opener to see the amount of πŸ’© in daily products. If I read the details section of each product scan, it mentions xx chemical is banned or has a limit or a warning in the EU, but is allowed in the US with no restrictions! WTF! 🀦 Can't wait for RFK to get confirmed!

Because, whilst he's done some nice things in the past, and is right to be concerned about and criticise Ultra Processed Foods, he routinely spouts complete and utter provably false dangerous bullshit (e.g. about vaccines and COVID and so much else).

And even on the processed foods stuff e.g. "He later clarified that he does not want to take away access to processed food for Americans: "If you like a McDonald's cheeseburger or a Diet Coke - which my boss loves - you should be able to get them," he said"

Like pretty much all politicians everywhere (very much including Democrats in the US and Labour in the UK too, btw) I don't believe for a second he'll take any actions against the owners of capital who (especially in the US, but here in the UK too) have basically purchased them. And it's those owners who benefit from selling us nutritionally empty ultra processed crap.

Michael Pollan's 7 word food manifesto is still pretty spot-on IMHO:

                          Eat food*.
                          Not too much.
                          Mostly plants.

*by which he means actual food, not UPF (nice summary here)

But on the topic of UPF I can highly recommend these great talks by Chris Van Tulleken (author of Ultra-Processed People: Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn’t Food … and Why Can’t We Stop?) :

And these which are for children and so really accessible (those in the UK can watch them over on iPlayer) :

Sorry, it had to be said πŸ˜›

@humptydumpty I relaly hope RFK does do something positive about UPF because it's even worse there in the US than here in the UK. If he actually does I've give you $10 to buy that book (but you can also find it on Z Library, etc too πŸ˜‰ ). But even if he does I'll still think he's mostly a dangerous nonsense spouting numpty πŸ™‚ 😘

Looking good. Best you can do now is to limit anything rubbing on your face (no hands, shirts, etc.) and keep your body temp "cool". Wash your face with cold water when the itch starts. It looks like you're trimming the beard to keep it all even. If not, doing so will help keep you refreshed too.

@luckow It is looking good! I wish I could help. It's been so many years with my beard that I can't remember if I experienced the itching at all when it was "sprouting". But since AI is wiser than me, beard oild seems to be the suggested remedy. Here are some suggestions available in the EU: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/what-are-the-best-beard-oils-a-WZ.FkWizSP2BpCNmbVoi1Q

Quick feedback after a month: men are not willing to talk about cosmetic issues in rooms with topics other than β€œmen's issues”. I don't know why. Maybe because they never learned to find words for their (personal) problems. Most people with beards I've met can't remember the early days. My personal problem with itching still exists. Not a day goes by that I don't think about the razor (and the good old days). But ... let's see what the next month brings πŸ™‚

Despite an after shave balm or something like that? For me, slight irritation comes and goes, but a balm like that works.

This may or may not be good news for you @luckow. I started growing out my beard about 4.5 years ago, I also had constant itchiness, and pimples. I started using beard moisturizer, but it didn't seem to make a difference. About 2 years ago I shaved it all off (the combo pic), and started using better beard oil and keeping it clean right from the start, and in the past 2 years it hasn't been itchy at all, nor any skin issues. It felt to me that shaving it all off after years of trying somehow reset everything. So, I'm not suggesting you shave it all off now, but perhaps after you seen it through to a decent length, if that problem continues, you could think of doing it.

The itchiness would start after this stage:

Now, since I'm caring for the chin hair like the hair on my head, no itchiness and no skin issues:
